The Burden of the Protector by S.C. Eston

Overview: The black and occult mountains of Ul Darak form an impenetrable barrier in the far east of Jarum. In the hope of unraveling its mysteries, a group of scholars settled the village of Ta'Énia. To ward themselves against the wrath of the mountains, the scholars brought with them devoted knights known as the protectors.
Every day and every night, the protectors scout the fringes of the mountains, walking in their constant shadows, stopping unsuspecting travelers and escorting scholars on their quest for knowledge. Theirs is a predictable life of devotion, honor and servitude.
Dàr is born to a long family of loyal protectors. He completes his training at a young age and is assigned to the Yurita Highlands, a region known for its rugged terrains and regular earthquakes. His career is very promising, until he stumbles on a strange object in the center of a glade.
The moment he sees the object, Dàr knows he should report his discovery to the scholars. So the object can be investigated, so the object can be made to disappear, so normalcy can return.
But Dàr does not.
