Overview: Despite living in the shattered world, life was simple for the humble shepherd Jacob. However, when a neighboring fragment of the land is plunged into the void, the alien sorceress Nyasia is stranded near Jacob's home, and is rescued by the shepherd. She warns him and his village of Jadebush of an impending disaster, connected to the fading power of magic. Fearing this calamity, Jacob and Nyasia embark on a journey to the city of Briar, to petition the lord of the city for aid. On the road to Briar, Jacob learns about the mysterious arts of magic from Nyasia.
Arriving at Briar, more troubles arise. Jacob soon discovers that he himself possesses an uncanny talent for the arcane. His and Nyasia's audience with the lord of the city is brought to a sudden halt by a deadly coup attempt. Unprecedented natural disasters sow danger and destruction in the streets. Jacob himself is targeted by the scheming and ambitious Antonius, a ruthless official who seeks to use the boy's newly discovered talent for magic in his own machinations.
Meanwhile, deep beneath the surface of the land, within the twisted and ruined foundations of the world, life stirred. Ancient beings who have long laid dormant have been roused from their inactivity by the same event that upended Jacob's life. Some mean well, but are unaware of the civilizations still existing upon the surface. Others have been driven insane by many millennia of isolation. The actions of both will have far reaching effects upon Briar, Jadebush, and beyond.
