The Many Worlds of Science Fiction by Ben Bova (Editor)
Requirements: PDF Reader | 4.56 MB | Version: Scanned
Overview: The purpose of this book is to show “where it’s at” in the science fiction world today. For science fiction is a broad, exciting field that encompasses a rich variety of subject matter, writing styles, and personal attitudes. That’s what we mean by “the many worlds” of science fiction. In fact, this book should really be titled “The Many Worlds of SF.” For nowadays the term SF is often used instead of “science fiction.” Depending on who’s doing the talking, SF can mean science fiction, science fantasy, speculative fiction, or even scientific fantabulation (which sounds almost as grotesque as the quaint old term, s c ifì). In short, SF goes far beyond the heavily technological space operas of yesteryear. Science fiction has often been unfairly downgraded as pulp literature, usually by people who never took the trouble to look past the garish cover of a science fiction magazine. But even in the most heavily technical, off-to-Mars, shoot-the-monster stories, science fiction offered something to its readers that attracted and held them. Some people called this attraction “a sense of wonder.” Others pointed out that science fiction is a literature of ideas, a literature of change, and in a world where change is dizzyingly apparent, science fiction speaks directly about the real world around us.
