Fire From the Sky Series by N.C. Reed (#3-4,11)
Requirements: ePUB Reader, 1.2 MB
Overview: N.C. Reed doesn't really exist. He's just a figment of someone's imagination. But if he was real, they would imagine him as a gray haired curmudgeon who likes pecan pie entirely too much. He would be a constant source of annoyance to a loving and doting wife. Despite that, the mutant Doberman would spend much time in his company as he writes. Or as he pretends to write in order to get people to leave him alone. Or as he sits by the window and wonders who that is driving down 'his' road. Or when he just locks himself in his study and pretends no one is calling his name.
Genre: Science Fiction > Post-Apocalyptic

Trial by Fire (#3)
The world has stopped turning. Well, most things in the world have stopped turning, anyway. Clay Sanders, his friends and his family thought they were prepared for the immense Coronal Mass Ejection that literally turned off the lights in most of the world, turning First World nations into pre-industrial nations in a matter of hours. No more phones, television, motor vehicles, radios, or GPS. The United States has gone from following the most popular celebrities on social media and worrying about the latest fashions to simply trying to survive. The winter has been relatively quiet for the Sanders clan and their new neighbors, and they have used that time to firm up their plans and their position. They are confident now that they are on the right track. Gordy Sanders and his friends have trained all winter long under brutal conditions to join the former commandos of Clay's old army unit and are now ready to test their skills. Their first outing finds them in a fight against apparent raiders molesting a small family a few miles from the ranch. But there are much bigger problems on the horizon that will make that trial look immaterial in comparison. Things are about to heat up around the Sanders ranch, and winter hasn't even officially ended yet!
Firestorm (#4)
Bandits. Forest fires. Cannibals. Material shortages. Family problems. Why had Clayton Sanders expected these issues and others like them to be absent from life at the end of the modern world? It had sounded good anyway. His plan had been simple; dig in, hunker down, and wait it out. He knew that society would go through a 'reset' period before things settled down. He knew people would suffer during that time, but also knew he couldn't stop it. He couldn't help the world around him but he could try and keep his family and closest friends safe. Maintain at least a semblance of normalcy for them. And then his family had gotten involved.
First it was his parents insisting that they show everyone the Sanders had working vehicles and extra food by taking supplies to the church in Jordan to 'donate'. This had resulted in a fight for that same vehicle and a near battle just to get away.
Then his niece had gone charging into Peabody to 'rescue' her friend, only to be caught herself and necessitate a rescue mission for her that he still partially regretted as it had cost the life of his best friend “Big Bear” John Barnes. Then Leon, Clay's irascible grandfather decided they needed to build a town of sorts and gather good people with skills they needed to occupy it. Now, the people Leon brought are beginning to want to do things differently, his parents have yet to learn their lesson about letting other people know that the Sanders were better prepared than average for the disaster that had beset the Earth, and on top of everything else who shows up? Tax collectors.
Maybe things haven't changed so much after all. Now he has to defend his family farm from an old enemy of his father and prevent him and his army of miscreants from taking the very things Clay and the others need to survive. All in a day's work here at the end of the modern world, right? With the dig in and hunker down plan now truly shot to hell, Clay and his friends are going to have to face some rough odds in defending their family and home. Fortunately, this isn't the first time they've faced such a thing. Their enemies don't have a clue what kind of Firestorm they're about to ignite.
Ashes (#11)
Its Thanksgiving on the Sanders Farm. Clayton Sanders and his collection of friends, family and even a few strangers have managed to keep themselves moderately safe in a vicious new world, brought about by the most massive Coronal Mass Ejection ever seen or recorded. Anything electrical and not protected from the surge of power has been completely fried. Most cars won’t start, the electrical grid has crashed, people with pacemakers in their chests have dropped dead in their tracks, the list goes on and on of things and lives destroyed by an electrical storm that lasted only a few minutes but created a light show that lasted for days. Once the shock wore off, the violence began. Calhoun County has seen rough times, in some ways much rougher than the other rural counties around them. The seat of the county government is a ghost town and the people who have survived three different waves of violence have moved on to what they hope will be greener pastures. Clay and his family have helped as many people as they can but have had to draw the line for now, as they struggle to ensure that their farm and ranch can produce enough food to help feed far more than themselves. Even with a good harvest, they face lean times before the next harvest can be brought in. Helping others has left them with shallow cupboards once more. Still facing problems, the National Guard contingent is trying to restore order, and Greg Holloway has been appointed as the new Sheriff. He faces an uphill battle to reestablish not only law and order, but trust among the surviving citizens for their peace officers, the former officers not having done much to endear themselves to the public. But the Sanders clan and their extended family and friends are about to face a problem much larger than any criminals they’ve had to face. A killer is roaming the highways. A killer that cannot be seen and cannot be fought. Their only hope is to once again cut themselves off from the rest of the world and wait things out. If others will only allow them to.
