The Zmei by Daniel A Nanto

Overview: I know the question that’s running through your mind right now. What is a zmei? No, it’s not some kind of fun-loving character who speaks in rhymes and causes kids to giggle. Far from it. A zmei is a Russian dragon. That’s right. A fire breathing, three-headed monster who's very real and truly terrifying. In any other circumstance, I would’ve avoided it like death itself. The problem is, what do you do if a zmei starts hunting the girl you love? Okay, well, technically Nikkō isn’t a human girl, she's a Japanese fairy. Still, you can’t just sit back and watch as a dragon turns the girl of your dreams into a late-night, char-broiled snack.
Luckily, I'm not alone. Chan is with me. He’s a kasa-obake or a Japanese umbrella spirit who currently possesses a samurai sword sharp enough to cut through anything. The weapon is called a Reiken blade and there's only a few left in the entire world. I also have my new friend, Yui, a teenage foo dog from Chinatown.
And I have other help as well. It turns out, there's all kinds of Slavic mythological creatures hiding in the mountains of Colorado and the mid-western states and none of them like living next to a fiery dragon. But, even with all my friends help, I don’t know what chance I have against Uzhas. Oh yeah, that’s the name of the zmei— Uzhas. It means ‘horror’ in Russian. And believe me, it lives up to its name.
