The Radiance Trilogy by Steven Sandy (#1-2)

Overview: When I was in third grade my mom handed me a book that she thought I would like. It was a shiny golden hardcover that was bigger than anything I had read before, and I stayed up all night to finish. That book was The Hobbit, and it was my first venture into the fantasy genre. Since then I have been an avid consumer of all things fantasy, and have come to love the worlds of authors such as Tolkien, Robert Jordan, and Robin Hobb. As I grew older, I got the crazy idea to begin building worlds of my own, to craft characters that would come alive on the page, and to create stories that make readers want to stay up all night to finish, just like I used to as a child (and sometimes still do as a “responsible” adult). So began a number of projects, with my first book, Unbound, being published in the fall of 2019. In addition to my writing, I work part time as the worship pastor at a church in Los Angeles county. I love spending time in the mountains, playing board games with friends, making music, and coming up with more creative and crazy ideas. I’m married to a wonderful woman, and am the proud father of two young boys.

1. Unbound
For a thousand years the Edenian Empire has stood as a bastion of peace in the world of Luoma, protected by heroes known as the Knights of Radiance. Yet now a forgotten evil stirs in the eastern reaches of the frontier, setting the world ablaze. Unbound. The name given to creatures of legend, monstrosities capable of leveling cities and obliterating entire armies. No one has seen an Unbound for centuries, and few believe they ever really existed, until now. Caelum is a young scholar in possession of an ancient journal that may be the empire’s best hope against the Unbound, but a series of troubling choices call his credibility into question. All the while, another sinister force lurks in the shadows, manipulating events to further its own dark ambitions. What was is no more, what remains is Unbound.

Long ago the rival nations of Edenia and Razza forged a treaty, allowing them to coexist in peaceful isolation. Now, in the midst of calamity, heroes from both lands are confronted with an evil none were prepared for, and the hope of peace is fading to darkness. Terrors of old known as the Unbound now roam the earth, threatening to destroy everything in their path. Gods to the people of Razza, monsters to those of Edenia, their true nature remains shrouded in mystery. Caelum, the first Knight of Radiance seen in generations, stands at the center of it all, struggling to understand a strange new power he possesses that inspires fear in friend and foe alike. Faced with a looming war, vicious beasts of legend, and devastating revelations, Caelum begins to suspect that a greater enemy has yet to be revealed.
