McCray is arguably one of the Navy's best warship commanders, but politically, he's probably the worst. While trying to regain the Admiralty's goodwill during an anti-piracy mission, he's also trying to maintain a romantic relationship with the ship's intelligence services liaison, and failing on that front as well. Just to add in insult to injury, McCray must deal with crewmen who actually believe in space monsters.
Even when he wins, he loses. Even with a wounded ship, he still manages to capture a pirate, but politically it's the very worst person possible. McCray soon finds himself on a planet in a firefight, and facing powerful warship his vessel has no hope of defeating. McCray could run and save ship and crew, or hurl themselves into the fire and save millions from a horrific existence at the hands of an authoritarian regime. To survive he'll need help from former enemies, the woman who loves him despite his faults, and something else he never would've believed possible.
