Overview: Emme DeWitt hails from nowhere in particular. The best they can really offer is the Midwest, and even that's not very telling. Having moved around a lot as a child, Emme found their home in bookstores, libraries, and the occasional traveling book fair. They were most certainly that annoying child who asked too many questions and decided to dream up their own answers when the responses trended towards "I don't know," "Ask your mother," and their ultimate favorite, "Why on earth would you want to know that?".

No matter where Noah goes, tragedy strikes. As a banshee, only Noah can see it coming, but it’s all she can do to run away to lessen the damage her voice causes when she sings for the dead. Orphaned from birth, Noah has been trying to control her powers on her own with the help of her guardian Adele. But Noah’s powers are more out of control than ever, and Adele is out of options.
As the final condition of her parents’ trust, Noah lands at Windermere Prep. All she has to do is keep a low profile until graduation. Easier said than done when one out of four students on campus haunts her in her dreamscape. With no where else to run, Noah is stuck trying to decode her own powers while surviving the hell of day to day school life.
But within days of her arrival, one boy is dead, another awakens from a coma, and Noah is stuck as the only common link between the two. With a target painted on her back, Noah is desperate to clear her name.
Something is afoot at Windermere. Can Noah learn to control her powers in time to escape persecution?

Evangeline is overwhelmed. Not only is Noah gone, but now Evangeline is trapped in an Association run medical research facility with no allies, no agency, and no way to get out. As her powers grow, Evangeline musters all her strength to keep it together, all while feeling the call to get out, get to Noah, and get answers. Days run together, weeks and months pass, and Evangeline doesn't feel any closer to figuring out how to control her Elevation---or who she can even trust to help.
When news arrives that her abuela has passed away, Evangeline seizes the opportunity to go home to Chicago to say her final farewells and reconnect with the Elevated side of her family and the secrets they hold. For the first time since meeting Noah, Evangeline feels hope that she may finally find answers. Until her escape plan becomes a kidnapping.
Aleksander Navratil, the only remaining heir of a once powerful Elevated family, adds several new pieces to the puzzle. He seems determined to win Evangeline over and help her on her mission to save Noah and bring together other Elevated in the fight against The Association. But something isn’t right.What could he possibly want with Evangeline? Does he want to use her and her Empath powers, just like The Association? Or does he hold the key to showing Evangeline how to control her powers, finding Noah, and getting her life back?
