Overview: For months, an epidemic has ravaged the Human children of the World, with thousands dead and hundreds of thousands certain to die. there are some encouraging signs that the worst is over. But without a breakthrough, people continue to die.
Then, the longest of long-shots yields a completely unexpected result. A spaceship lands, answering the World's call for help. Inside, two females, one very Human looking, the other very much not Human looking. Together, they inform Seren about the realities of the galaxy, explaining that the World's solar system holds the richest lode of vital metals in the known Galaxy, spanning the border between the Shade Alliance and the United Galactic Worlds.
Seren immediately understands the potential for a power struggle over the riches. The World needs to leverage its ownership of those riches for the technology and aid they'll need to survive, while at the same time finding a way to protect what each side wants to possess. And not only hold off each side, but those who belong to neither, and are willing to destroy a planet and tens of millions of people to get what they want. In a galaxy-spanning voyage trying to decide which side to join, Seren and a delegation from the World encounter the good, the bad and the ugly of both sides, only to discover an ancient mystery that will directly impact the future of not only the World, but the entire galaxy itself.
