Overview: Something unknown is hunting the people of Siden. The crown is desperate to keep the attacks secret as a refugee crisis looms over the capital city of Bristol. To absorb the refugee flow from the southern coastal cities, King Gilbert desires these refugees to migrate to the frontier. Amiethest is a broken kingdom. Aside from the frontier, only two Lordships support the House of Tobias. The Lords of the southern coastal cities plot to overthrow Bristol through war if not by marriage. They call themselves the Palligotto, and relations between these cities and the crown deteriorate by the season.
The House of Tobias needs population growth on the frontier to counter the strength of the Palligotto, and the very refugees from the lands ruled by the Palligotto may be the key to that growth. If the attacks on the citizens of Siden become more widely known, the movement of refugees from Bristol could be hampered.
Princess Ladonna, the only daughter of King Tobias, travels the settlements of the frontier to promote the relocation of refugees. She struggles with local populations that are leery of the proposed re-settlement plan. The last frontier town she visits before returning to her father in Bristol is the remote village of Siden. Here she must keep the knowledge of the attacks from the people and find a way to eliminate the threat before returning home where suiters from the southern coastal cities impatiently await her return.
