Goth kid and loner Juniper Reed will never admit it, but she really likes Augmented Creatura, the fun creature-battling phone game that has swept up her high school. Riho Kishi, her former best friend, has went viral as a game streamer, and Augmented Creatura is her claim to fame. And Juniper will never tell a soul, but she has never missed one of Riho's streams, even if they haven't spoken in 4 years.
And finally, the pull is just too much for the teen, and she jumps into the game, catching the first dark-type creature that she comes across. He's a cute little thing named Beul, who walks on four legs and hits with an attack that sucks the soul from his enemies. Neat!
But when a mysterious event happens at the server warehouse, Juniper wakes up with two strange red eyes looking at her from a wispy black body covered in bone plated armor. And everything in her world tips upside down. Juniper cannot tell a soul, not her parents, not her rat-like brother, and certainly not Riho...
