Overview: How did Jaf Daskal become the man he did? In "A Kid from Kipple" we follow him from street urchin to becoming a young man, with the typical milestones along the way -- young love, political corruption, gigolo, thief, fugitive, and murder.
When Rabbara rescues him and welcomes foundling Jaf into her home, she gives him the first taste of normalcy in his young life. One night, while playing a street game with his 'brother' Vinke and friends, the two boys discover a very tempting target for larceny, giving no thought to the consequences of a harmless little pilferage.
Jaf also is charmed by a newcomer, a girl who's as fast and flexible with her morals as he is. She's his first love, and their normal future glows before him, as Jaf also gets his first steady job, working for the small-time crime boss who runs Durary, a humble suburb in Kipple, itself a largely forgotten region of the Empire.
As he rises in the organization his duties take him afield, his flexible ethics and ability to blend in getting him work as a political operative. The upcoming election is a big one, and lots of money and skullduggery are at work to shape the future of Kipple. Jaf finds himself in the thick of it, influencing the hicks during the evenings and spending the nights in the arms of strange women -- until he finds himself in the bed of the strangest of all, the political candidate herself.
The election won, he finds himself disposable and on the run. As he understands the danger of his situation he realizes he's in a race to save all that's dearest to him, himself, and his honor.
