Racing to rescue his family, Blake and his comrades are captured by the Octos, interstellar slave drivers who force them to fight other sentients in shapeshifting, memory-erasing arenas. To survive these terrors, Blake must learn to work with his crew, as well as alien gladiators from across the galaxy. If he refuses to fight, Blake’s family—held hostage—will be slaughtered.
But as Blake discovers his talent for survival, he likewise uncovers his worst fears: the Octos are launching an armada to enslave Earth. Blake must therefore choose. Will he rescue his family, or abandon them to warn Earth’s new revolutionary government about annihilation?
2. Star Drive - From slavery to freedom and back again.
Twenty years ago Jonathan Blake was enslaved. Forced to fight death matches in shapeshifting gladiatorial arenas on an alien world, he and his comrades overcame impossible odds and overthrew their masters, liberating billions of workers across a vast interstellar empire.
But there was a problem. One of Blake’s comrades was a traitor.
Tricked into visiting a mysterious Dyson Sphere at the galaxy’s far side, Blake was trapped, his memory erased, his body dissected by superintelligent insects called Swarms. Their goal? Learn how someone so ordinary could do something so extraordinary: rumor has it that Blake wields divine power.
While the Swarms experiment on Blake’s body, his mind is locked inside a realer-than-real fantasy. There he believes he is living happily on Earth with his one true love and their child. How can he escape when he doesn’t even know that he’s in chains?
Blake will have to learn, for his traitorous comrade, racked with guilt, has a change of heart and frees him. Now Blake must race home, for the Swarms have sworn to either recapture him or turn Earth to dust—along with everyone and everything he has ever known. Can Blake learn to wield his superhuman power? Or will he succumb to the awesome strength of the Swarms?

Jonathan Blake was just an ordinary guy thrust into extraordinary circumstances. First came the world revolution, where Blake fought for freedom alongside Earth’s workers. Next came interstellar war, as Blake and his comrades explored the stars in humanity’s first FTL-capable starships, overthrowing galactic empires and liberating billions. At the end came power: Blake not only discovered that he was a living god, but likewise found himself elected leader of the UWC, Earth’s first global workers’ state.
Decades have passed, and after so much progress, Earth is now returning to old ways. Economic exploitation is back with a vengeance, and climate change again threatens humanity’s existence. Chairman Blake, meanwhile, is AWOL. Lost in his skyscraper palace, living with a harem of naked women, he has grown corrupt, ignorant, and lazy—the embodiment of all he once sought to destroy.
Disgusted with his behavior, Blake’s former comrades no longer speak with him. One of these, Natalya Petrova, decides to flee civilization to do environmental research in the wild. There she makes an astounding discovery, one which will have profound implications for Blake, the UWC, and the galaxy.
