There exists a tiny world somewhere within the extra-dimensional cosmos that attracts souls. It's one where a giant mass of transcendentalmetal and magic—the Black Cradle—sits in the sky. It looms over the people of the world, and is orbited by a Flying Castle.
This thing that exists in the sky is this world's god.
The people of this world revere the Black Cradle, and have done so for 5,000 years. But now, things have changed.
On the fifth day of the fifth month of the 5000th year of the Black Cradle calendar, 500 denizens were bestowed countdowns. When the countdowns hit zero, those denizens were whisked away.
The people left behind called them Chosen, and celebrated them for being worthy of their god. Of course it had to be their god that took them...
But then, they returned, and they were Chosen no more. They were survivors.
The ones who returned told the world of what they experienced—The abysmal Trial. It was a realm where parameters were quantified and monsters roamed. Not many survived.
Now, the countdowns have returned and a batch of 500 denizens will once again be taken into the bowels of the thing they call god.
But this story isn't about some farm boy on his way to overcome all challenges or a veteran standing up for the good of his nation. No, this story is about the man that lives in the Flying Castle.

Only time will tell if it will be more perilous than the first.
