Sovereigns of the Collapse series by Malcolm J. Wardlaw (#1-4)

Overview: I am fascinated by the impossibilities facing humanity. Too many “can’t happens” lurk in the future for our outcome to be pleasant. Our planet is already being ruined, yet “middle class affluence” has reached hardly more than one tenth of the global population. Does anyone believe the planet can support ten times more affluence? As the old adage goes, if something cannot go on, then it will eventually stop. In my fiction, I explore the possible “stops”, and what comes after.
Genre: Fiction > Sci-Fi/Fantasy | Dystopian | Steampunk

1. Death by Decent Society
Privacy is sacred. Secrets are power. Questions are dangerous. Donald Aldingford lives inside the walled city of London, where he survives as a barrister who does not ask questions. However, on a flight to see a client, he gets shot down and jailed for violating private airspace. This opens his eyes to what happens on the estates of the wealthy. It’s quite a shock to see how ‘decent’ people treat their slaves. He’s outraged to learn his own brother Lawrence has been condemned to eight years of slave labour for crimes he did not commit. After his release, he shares his outrage with an attractive young woman from outside the city walls. She’s a leading revolutionary. Powerful eyes are watching Donald. They’re going to make him an offer he can’t refuse.
2. The Value System
Lawrence Aldingford arrives at a mysterious camp deep in the marshes of eastern England. He has been condemned to eight years’ slave labour for crimes he did not commit. This camp—the Value System—proves to be the living nightmare of a criminally insane mind. No one is ever released. No one has ever escaped. Lawrence is facing a life sentence. He has three options: endure hell, commit suicide, or be the first to escape. Very quickly, he vows he’ll escape or die trying. But when he approaches old-timers to join him in a break, not one is interested. The savages of the marshes inflict horrific deaths on those who break out of the Value System. No one has ever escaped. Then the camp owner stuns Lawrence by offering him a job. He can be free and rich—and criminal. Strangely, another inmate, a eunuch called Antonio Pezzini, gets the same offer the same day. They’ll be shot if they refuse, yet neither can bear serving such a crook. They must escape, and quickly. Winter is falling.
3. The Church of Nuclear Science
A thread of hope from a cousin far away. But there’s something dangerous in the family treasury. It can kill in a flash. They all have plans. Donald is going to defeat the fanatics of the National Party. Lawrence aims to destroy the Value System of Nightminster. Sarah-Kelly Newman has vowed to expose the criminality of the glory trusts. All three walk into a trap laid by the great sovereign Tom Krossington. And the trap springs! After which everyone—including Tom Krossington—has to find new ways of staying alive as loyalties shift and the justice of the Atrocity Commission reaches farther and farther from London. Gold bars are the least of their worries—apparently. Nightminster awaits his moment.
4. Operation Ultimate
The truth of the Value System is too outrageous to believe. But if many people tell the same story, the outside world must act. Surely? Lawrence has won the support of the Shellingfield clan to attack the Value System. First, he has to prove to the world what it is. As a bishop of the Church of Nuclear Science, Donald has the clout to challenge Nightminster for control of the atomic project. But the ever-resourceful Nightminster is not easily beaten. He is all too aware that his Value System has to be purged—quickly. And he has evidence that would see Bishop Donald Aldingford not just disgraced, but executed, if the Krossingtons don’t get him first.
