Bellows City has only ever been three things: damp, dark, and unfair. Each day Magi-Corps patrols the rain-slicked streets seeking to detain anyone Burdened with magic, and whoever they catch most likely isn’t coming back. Aside from the government issuing the reminders to remain vigilant to those who would use magic against civilians, those in charge don’t regulate Magi-Corps practices anymore; what was once an organized department to rid the city of those who would commit crimes has become a brute force willing to imprison mass murders and children alike, so long as they’re caught practicing magic. The perfect conditions for igniting a magic-fueled revolution.
All too aware of Magi-Corps’ relentless nature, Taniff has lived her life doing everything she could to avoid anyone knowing her ability. Not Magi-Corps and certainly not the magic community. She keeps everyone out. It’s the only guarantee. She’s willing to remain living in squalor and pretending to fix dolls by hand. No need to draw attention.
But when a tattered doll is dropped off for repair, Taniff’s illegal magic brings something into existence that shouldn't be—an angry voodoo who has only ever known torture. To avoid being caught by the Magi-Corps, it will be up to Taniff to stop the violent, destructive doll before his actions shine a light on her biggest secret.
2. Pen to Paper
For Vasnia, she’s done well enough for herself, considering the odds, and stays out of Magi-Corps view solely because her clientele wants what she has—the ability to alter their future by writing them a new story—and loyal customers are silent customers.
She's learned pretty quick that mingling with the right crowd can also fund a better lifestyle, a lifestyle she’s been dreaming of since childhood where even magic slums are still slums. But when Vasnia attends an exclusive event where tragedy strikes, Magi-Corps becomes all too interested in questioning attendees and it seems everyone is talking.
3. Our Red City
There’s not a lot Selene cares about in this wreck of a world but her own hide and the rights of those Burdened with magic are two of them.
Tasked with tracking down the doll singer to enchant more deadly voodoo dolls for the Resistance’s army, Selene discovers the fight is headed to her door; Magi-Corps intends to destroy the Near Street magic slums, eradicating their biggest foe and the city’s biggest eye sore.
The Resistance isn’t ready, it’s too uncoordinated, but if Selene can’t find a way to stir them into action, and fast, a lot of Burdened are about to get killed.
4. Marble and Thorn
Caught between the danger of isolation and a fear of Magi-Corps finding her again, Taniff seeks the protection of the Resistance. Unfortunately, the only way to secure her safety is to risk her biggest secret: she knows the location of Jack, the angry voodoo doll brought to life.
As the pressure to expose Jack increases, Selene asks her once more to join the Resistance, but Taniff is more than a little hesitant, and Selene has enough on her hands trying to craft a revolution. At the same time, Vasnia works under the pressure of Magi-Corps to craft a 'once story' in which the MC leaves victorious, but the pressure to spin magic in order to destroy it is becoming unbearable.
