The Marianne Trilogy by Sheri S. Tepper
Requirements: ePUB reader, 659 KB
Overview: The heroine of the title seems like an impossibly tedious chiché. She’s a tragic orphaned heiress, young, lovely and fey, forced into semi-squalor by the machinations of her callous half-brother. She is studying at university when she meets a tall, dark, handsome prince who promptly begins sweeping her off her feet. Even here though, there are clues that Marianne is more than she appears. She is unusually bloody-minded and fierce beneath her gentle appearance, and wages an intriguing daily war against the forces of random chaos.
A genuine aura of menace surrounds Marianne right from the start, conjured expertly via her seemingly innocuous surroundings. This builds swiftly until Marianne suddenly finds herself flung, amnesiac, into a series of twisted nightmarish alternate realities. These border worlds are everything you’d expect from Sheri Tepper — dark, peculiar, engaging and stunningly creative. Marianne herself approaches them as a grown-up Alice might, with fiery resolve and pragmatic ruthlessness. Her dashing Prince Charming attempts to rush to the rescue, but frankly he’s barely needed.

Genre: Sci-Fi/Fantasy

01. Marianne, the Magus and the Manticore (1985)
When Marianne's parents died, leaving control of their fortune to her feared older brother, she struggled to make her way as a student in America - and her old home began to seem as unreal as a fairy tale, her childhood there as distant as a dream . . . Until the Magus came to claim her, and the Black Madame to destroy her, and the Manticore to hunt her down through the streets of another world - for there is magic in Marianne's blood, and magic in her soul. And in a battle fought in an everchanging world of warped time and wicked magic, it is the souls of Marianne and her family that are the ultimate prizes.

02. Marianne, the Madame, and the Momentary Gods (1988)
It was the perfect scheme. Marianne would use the magic she learned from a great magus to twist time backwards. Then she would relive her childhood and hopefully, prevent her parents' death. Shrewd yes – but soon Marianne was reeling helplessly into an everchanging world of warped time and wicked magic.

03. Marianne, the Matchbox, and the Malachite Mouse
Win, lose, or die.
It started with a most unusual deathbed request from Marianne's Great-aunt Dagma. A matchbox, borrowed ever so long ago, needed returning to its elusive owner, Cattermune. But how and where to find this creature? For Marianne, the clues took the form of a strange game, indeed...
In which reality changes from roll to roll, transforming Marianne into a malachite mouse in a dinosaur zoo... among other things.
In which Cattermune himself is oddly reluctant to receive the matchbox in question, expecting instead a more devastating settlement.
In which the souls of Marianne and her family are the ultimate prize to this malignant being who plays to win - and cheats to conquer.
The name of the game, it appears, is survival.
