A fun event quickly takes a turn for the worst when one of the town councilman in attendance, Kipper Rio, is discovered dead. It's now up to Madeline with the help of her friends, to do some "snooping" and expose the killer. If this murder case is going to get solved, Madeline and the gang need to move quickly and quietly. When paying Evan a visit to wish a fellow pastry chef good luck, Madeline brought him a box of her famous cupcakes as a "welcome" gift. Now it appears as if those very cupcakes were what killed him. An investigation by police chief Connors reveals the tasty treats were laced with poison, and Madeline is his chief suspect! Did she do it? Could she do it? Or is the REAL culprit still walking free? It's up to Madeline and her helpful friends to clear her name once and for all.
Drop Dead Baker (#8) Professional Baker and Bakery owner Madeline McDougal rolls into Chicago for a "Baking & Sweets Showcase" event. But as fate would have it, no matter where she goes... death is not too far behind. This time, a competitor named Linda Smith dies during the event. It's staged to suggest suicide but Madeline's detective instincts say different so she reaches out to her team back home in Oregon. Together, they grab Madeline's Persian cat Astoria and set out for the Midwest, where they plan to hook up with Madeline to help her catch the killer. However their newest case soon proves to be a very tangled web. All dark secrets come to light as Madeline and the gang try to separate the devious... from the murderous.
