Alethea, The Circus Sleuth series by Jenna Coburn (Books #1-3)
Requirements: .ePUB or .MOBI reader, 1.1mb, Retail Versions
Overview: New mystery series from Jenna Coburn. No author biography available.
Genre: Cozy Mystery
A Killer Blackout (book #1):
The Thwaite family has been part of the circus for several generations. Alethea Thwaite, the oldest of three siblings, even stands to inherit the old circus director’s position: Virgil Ardelean, ancient and eccentric, seems to deem her a worthy successor. Since Alethea is already doing half of everything around the place, she knows why.
Only when her brother Braden faces charges as the main suspect in the murder of beloved local Larry Patrick – without even remembering the night – it falls unto his older sister to exculpate him. While she’s quick on the uptake, being an investigator would have never crossed her mind. Luckily, someone outside of the circus also believes in Braden’s innocence: FBI Agent Holden Westley is on the case, and teams up with Alethea to find the real culprit. And she thought she knows weird.
That’s when Alethea has to learn that the circus stage isn’t the only place where odd things happen – between townsfolk, circus folk and law enforcement, she’s hard pressed to tell where the spectacle ends and the real world starts.
A Mysterious Aroma (book #2):
After a cryptically vague introduction into the world of magic by America Baker, Alethea feels not even a bit wiser than before. But her newfound experience as an investigative pro still makes her take action when the circus is rocked by crisis – just as they were packing up camp, acrobat Abel Faucheux is assaulted inside his trailer.
And if that wasn’t bad enough, Virgil is missing a precious jade figurine, and only Alethea can help him – after all, he doesn’t always want cops all up in his business. The cases pile up when Agent Westley suddenly shows up in town, investigating a murder that seems completely unrelated… until he calls in Alethea on a profound discovery at the scene.
Maneuvering three different cases between Westley, Virgil, a stray cat and America’s mystical advice, Miss Thwaite has her hands full, but at least she learned how to juggle at a young age.
A Fatal Festival (book #3):
Beautiful and warm Florida makes for an excellent winter quarter, especially when there’s a giant circus festival on that brings together performers and audiences from across the country. Of course, things start coming apart quickly, with Alethea almost being impaled by a throwing knife – another seeming coincidence that makes America give her stories about curses and sinister intent.
The sinister intent is apparently supplied by a gang of saboteurs that start sabotaging Virgil’s Circus and the Circus Pandaemonium, all on top of a mysterious rivalry between them that Virgil Ardelean himself claims to know nothing about. When security seems to be unable to resolve the situation and finally someone ends up dead, things look grim.
Of course, Agent Holden Westley is there for a last-minute rescue, as the first member of his special ‘Circus Crime’ elite unit. As the mystery of Alethea’s close encounter with the knife unfolds, it takes her closer to the saboteurs from an unanticipated direction – and she learns to look at the people around her with different eyes.
