Luckless line cook Rudi Quince can’t catch a break. On the mean streets of Adversity, a decaying city of square-jawed cooks and bare-knuckle crooks, Rudi struggles with a bout of bad fortune. Fired from his fancy job as a certified salaried sous-chef, he’s scraping by, now just a simple sandwich man of meager means. Like everyone, he’s a mite concerned by the recent spate of brutal murders, rumored to be the work of that fell beast that has hounded the city from its founding.
Rudi’s troubles pile up faster than he can count when the deadly and beautiful I.R.S officer Colonel Stavrogin comes to town. She is on a mission to deliver the city from its corrupt ministers, or failing that, destroy it. Somehow Rudi’s delinquent brother has gotten himself mixed up in the Colonel’s dealings and now Rudi along with him. As Rudi tries to make things right he finds himself pursued by foul folk: criminal thugs and crooked politicians and ruthless federal agents.
Events spiral out of control when Rudi stumbles onto a terrible conspiracy that threatens worse to come. Malicious forces have conspired to let loose the vengeful creature of local legend upon the city. There’s rough days ahead, for Rudi’s got to figure who he can trust before everything falls apart.
