River Of Darkness: "An edge-of-the-seat thriller - compelling stuff."—Robert Goddard
Awards: Edgar Awards (nominee), Macavity Awards (nominee), Anthony Awards (nominee)
It is 1921 and a terrible discovery has been made at a manor house in Surrey - the bloodied bodies of Colonel Fletcher, his wife and two of their staff. The police seem ready to put the murders down to robbery with violence, but DI Madden from Scotland Yard sees things slightly differently.
The Blood-Dimmed Tide: "Unnerving... from a richly textured background, Airth draws a vivid cast of full-bodied characters and a plot that satisfies."—The New York Times Book Review
It is 1932 and John Madden, former Scotland Yard inspector, is now a farmer in the Surrey countryside, until he discovers the body of a small girl. Uneasy at the direction of police enquiries, he quietly begins his own investigation. It leads to Germany, where the Nazis are on the brink of power.
The Dead of Winter: "The latest gripping installment in what's becoming my favorite series of British crime novels."—David Ignatius
He could see in searchlights probing the night sky, illuminating the barrage balloons which floated like giant moths above the darkened city to hinder the approach the V-2s which descended without warning like thunderclaps and which Londoners had come to fear more than any other weapon used against them. During a blackout on the streets of London on a freezing evening in late 1944, a young Polish land girl, Rosa Nowak, is suddenly and brutally killed. For the police, their resources already stretched by the new war regulations and the thriving black market, this is a shocking and seemingly random crime. No one can find any reason why someone would want to murder an innocent refugee. For the former police inspector John Madden, the crime hits close to home. Rosa was working on his farm and he feels personally responsible for not protecting her. His old colleagues Angus Sinclair and Billy Styles are still at the Yard but struggle to make sense of their few clues. Their only lead points towards Europe - but as the war rages across the continent, will they find the killer before he strikes again?
The Reckoning: On a quiet afternoon in 1947, retired bank manager Oswald Gibson is shot in the head while fishing. In Scotland, a respectable family doctor is killed in the same manner - and with the same gun. What is the connection? Scotland Yard's Detective Inspector Billy Styles and local detective Vic Chivers are baffled until a letter from Gibson is discovered that might shed some light on the case - a letter concerning former Scotland Yard detective John Madden. Despite Madden's legendary memory, he has no recollection of meeting Gibson or any idea of what their relationship might have been. Madden is happily retired from police work, but agrees to help his former protege Styles and the clues they uncover only deepen the mystery. When a third man is killed in a similar fashion, Madden and Styles find themselves in a race against time to find the killer before another man ends up dead.
