What Price Fortune by Gerard Harrison

Overview: There’s a new game in town called What Price Fortune. It takes place on the private island of an oil magnate off the coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It has been granted legal autonomy and acts as its own government. All persons that set foot on the island are given temporary citizenship, forfeiting the natural citizenship of their home countries until they leave the island. Therefore all crimes committed on the island cannot be prosecuted outside of it.
The game takes place exclusively inside the largest palace one man has ever built for himself since Nero’s Domus Aurea. The entire game is arranged around the mystical number five. Five couples play but do not compete with each other for a 2.5 billion dollar pot. Each couple is entitled to 500 million dollars of the pot if they successfully negotiate the five challenges put to them. Even after many years of the game’s existence no one knows what the challenges are. All anybody knows is that the former contestants are bound to a non disclosure agreement barring them from discussing the details of the challenges and that every single contestant since the game’s inception has either killed themselves or gone insane.
Exactly in keeping with the object of the game.
Genre: Mystery/Thriller

The object of What Price Fortune is to prove that money isn’t everything. That even with a five hundred million dollar fortune one can find themselves unhappy and inconsolable.
The story centers on an interracial couple. George and Cindy Howard live in North Carolina. Despite the fact that they live in modern day America their relationship still suffered hardships due to the issue of race. They fought valiantly to maintain their relationship despite being disowned by their respective families.
They believe that it is by the grace of God that they were selected to play What Price Fortune. They believe that there is no challenge that could possibly be asked of them to do that they won’t be able to do. That, after so many years of fighting the good fight to maintain their relationship, there isn’t anything that could possibly break the bond that they’ve forged together in the fires of interracial intolerance. Plus, they have the peace of mind that if things get too rough they can always quit.
Because you can always, at any time, quit What Price Fortune.
But, if you quit, you go home with nothing.
They soon discover that their belief in their impenetrable solidarity was naive. Because the challenges are designed, not only to ruin their lives, but to keep them playing. By the final challenge they have lost so much of themselves that they can’t help but to do anything to win.
They unfortunately discover, that the bond they thought they had, was little more than vapor.
And that they were better off poor after all.
