Kalico Cat Detective Agency Mystery series (#1-4,6) by Penny S. Weibly

Overview: Three summers ago, I decided to follow the advice I give my creative writing students. I always tell them to: make writing a daily practice, write a story that they would like to read, and dare to fail gloriously.
Thus began the years' long journey of writing two cozy mysteries. The first novel, Maybe Murder, began slowly. Gradually, my young detective Benjamin Kalico and my persnickety, retired English teacher, Emelia Winterjoy, began to march across the pages. When Emelia, Kalico's client, sent his first case report back to him marked in red, I laughed out loud.
Genre: Fiction > Mystery/Thriller Cozy

Maybe Murder (#1)
Benjamin Kalico, a young man who has opened a detective agency is Austin, Texas. In The Kalico Cat Detective Agency, the first in the Kalico series, he forms an unlikely partnership with Emelia Winterjoy, a retired English teacher and nascent, amateur sleuth, to solve a murder “that hasn’t happened yet.”
Lured by a generous retainer and Emelia’s attractive niece, Kalico humors his elderly client at first. But while investigating a series of accidents, he begins to wonder: could these incidents have been planned? Between chasing escaped terriers and scaling trees after geriatric cats, Kalico gradually becomes convinced that Miss Winterjoy is not fanciful and grows to respect her. Then a member of her book circle dies, and the unlikely cohorts unravel a sinister plot, involving jealousy and revenge.
Dusty Death (#2)
Doc is missing. The problem: no one seems to know his name. Benjamin Kalico begins a search for the mysterious man that opens up a cold case and leads him into the Texas hill country where he must unravel the past to find Doc and uncover a family tragedy.
Tiffany Blair, a famous Hollywood actor, suspects that someone is trying to sabotage her break out role as Lady Macbeth in a western, hip-hop version of the tragedy. The headstrong star insists that Kalico investigate and be by her side day and night. Unable to devote full time to a frivolous case, he asks Miss Emelia Winterjoy, the intrepid retired English teacher, to go under cover as the star’s assistant. The excitement of being on location dims as pranks on set turn dangerous and lead to murder. Kalico and Miss Winterjoy join forces to solve the case and prevent disaster.
The Stolen Kist (#3)
Philanthropist, Millicent Smythe-Durban retreated to the tower rooms of her West Austin mansion after a family tragedy. Tired of her self-imposed exile, she calls old friend, Emelia Winterjoy, with a heartfelt request: serve as her intermediary with detective Benjamin Kalico to solve a long, cold case, clear the Durban name, and free her from her self-imposed exile.
Max Sheraton hires the Kalico Detective Agency to recover a stolen family heirloom, a Scottish chest or kist and its more valuable contents: a camera that may have belonged to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and one of the Cottingley fairy photographs. Miss Winterjoy and her circle are excited by the prospect of the hunt for a treasure chest, a hunt that will lead them from Austin’s City-wide Garage sale to a vampire parlor, and into danger.
Chaos at Saint Cat's (#4)
There’s trouble at St. Catherine’s Catholic Academy for Girls: a nun’s figure is burned in effigy on All Saint’s Day, the new Head of School is receiving threatening notes, and pranks are disrupting the scholastic calm of the prestigious, Austin private school. Much of the activity could be dismissed as teenage high jinks; however, the school’s treasured statue of St. Catherine of Siena is being held hostage.
“Heaven save me from teenage girls,” moans detective, Benjamin Kalico when he joins forces with Emelia Winterjoy to stop the mischief and find the statue. Although delighted to return to the classroom, the retired English teacher is troubled by the increasingly dangerous pranks as she quietly observes and investigates her colleagues, while Kalico chases down leads, basketballs, and errant chickens.
Murder with Merlot (#6)
In the sixth Kalico Detective Agency Mystery, Benjamin Kalico and friends seek the killer of a woman no one seems to have liked. The problem: too many suspects. Their search takes them into the Texas hill country where rival wineries and feuding matriarchs lead them ever deeper into danger.
