An Unspeakable Crime: A Novel of America's First Courtroom Scandal
Requirements: epub reader, 264 kb
Overview: On a lovely spring day in 1793, Patrick Henry’s morning is interrupted when an imperious young man requests his legal services. Henry would like to say no, but the man is Richard Randolph, a member of one of Virginia’s most prominent families, closely related to Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson. And Richard had made an offer of payment that is hard to refuse: Five hundred pounds sterling.
But the crime accused is one that turns Henry’s stomach. On October 1, 1792, Richard, his wife Judith, and Judith’s sister Nancy had left their home, Bizarre Plantation, and arrived at their cousin’s plantation. Nancy appeared noticeably more rotund and retired to her room early, complaining of colic. She would not come out for days. It was rumored that Richard had impregnated young Nancy and, when she went into labor, she and Richard had murdered their baby as it entered the world. It is a nasty story that is circulating through the county like a wild fire. At this point in his career, Henry would prefer to avoid such salacious events and people. But there is a fact to this horror story that intrigues Patrick Henry: There is no body.
Working alongside rising legal star John Marshall, Patrick Henry finds himself defending Richard Randolph for the murder of a baby that no one can even prove existed. Just as the inquest looks to be nothing more than an opportunity for the Randolph family to air their dirty laundry and personal vendettas against each other, the prosecution announces a surprise witness: Patsy Jefferson Randolph, sister-in-law to the accused and daughter of Thomas Jefferson.
Henry knows that the time has come to get to the bottom of what really happened that mysterious night in 1792, hopefully before his political rival’s daughter takes the stand. Still, it is with dread that he welcomes the woman at the heart of the alleged crime, Nancy Randolph, and she finally tells him and John Marshall the truth about what happened that night. But will the truth set Nancy and Richard free, or will their own family's testimony send them both to the gallows?
