Virginia Gould's world is turned upside down when a wealthy family member leaves her his house in his will.

One bad turn deserves another...
Basil Railsdon is on his way to becoming Conservative MP for the village of Loxford. A wealthy widower, he is also about to make an exemplary second marriage to elegant socialite, Henrietta Legge.
But then a freak accident changes everything. And suddenly the life Basil had planned seems to be on the edge of ruin.
Things are complicated further by the arrival of a half-sister Basil had never known about.
And when his newly-discovered sister, Laura, is found dead on his property, Basil's prospects take a turn for the worse.
Scotland Yard's Chief Superintendent Pollard and Detective Inspector Toye are called in to investigate Laura's death.
Was it a freak accident? Or is Basil now a murder suspect?**
And how is this death connected to the disappearance of a local girl... ?

Who in the village has a motive to murder... ?
A van is discovered in the water at the foot of a cliff in the village of Minstow.
The next day the remains of Dr John Paterson, late head of the geography department of the local college are found on a ledge halfway down the thousand-foot rock face.
Inspector Charles Nevinson quickly rules out suicide. It seems the pompous and self-centred Paterson was well-off and successful with no history of mental illness.
But was his death just a tragic accident? Or could there be more than one person in the village who wanted Paterson dead...
Nevison works with Scotland Yard's Chief Superintendent Pollard and Detective Inspector Toye to solve the case.
