Genre: Mystery/thriller

The Gypsy Hill Murders (#1)
The Gypsy Hill Murders is the work of P. J. Thurbin, a new writer to the fictional crime scene. He has a unique and fast moving style that will appeal to the reader who likes mysteries that are in the genre of those by John Grisham and M.C. Beaton.
His book has all the ingredients that one would expect to find in a classic murder mystery. It is centered on an ivy covered Victorian house set within the campus of a modern University just outside London. A group of five academics find themselves embroiled in a series of vicious attacks that are linked to incidents that took place 100 years earlier.
Rough Justice In Academia (#2)
Rough Justice in Academia is the work of P.J. Thurbin, a relatively new writer to the fictional crime scene. His fast moving style will delight the reader who enjoys a likeable cast of characters while at the same time is challenged with having to unravel a mystery. This is the second in a series of books featuring Ralph Chalmers, full time university professor and part - time sleuth. It is centered on a modern University campus situated near the town of Kingston upon Thames just 12 miles from London. A group of academics find themselves embroiled in the murder of a retired colleague as he and his wife leave a local theatre. Professor Ralph Chalmers attempts to unravel the links between an incident involving suspected cheating by two students while taking their final University examinations some 20 years earlier and the murder.
The Dorich House Mystery (#3)
Professor Ralph Chalmers is on the sleuthing trail again in Thurbin’s third book in the series. This time he is teamed up with the indomitable Katie Eggerton, friend, and former inmate of Holloway Women’s prison. This is yet another cracking yarn of murder and intrigue involving international art dealers, petty criminals and the world of underworld fraudsters.
When an art valuer in London is found murdered shortly after assessing the University’s collection at Dorich House, it doesn’t take long for Ralph and his new sidekick to get in on the action.
On the home front, Inspector Linham and his faithful Sergeant Wilson play by the book and tow a fine line to solve the murder while at the same time accepting any help they can get from Chalmers.
Murder at High Tide (#4)
Thurbin does not disappoint in this, his fourth book in the Ralph Chalmers mystery series. When Ralph finds himself the beneficiary of a rather sizeable inheritance from his Uncle Harry, he decides to throw his usual caution to the wind and uses it to buy a yacht and a cottage on the North Devon coast. The discovery of an abandoned fishing trawler in a rocky cove soon sets the scene for his involvement in gang warfare, smuggling and possibly murder. Not surprisingly, the feisty Katie Eggerton, his friend and assistant, joins him in applying his sleuthing skills to investigate a series of mysterious happenings near the sleepy seaside village of Clovelly. Katie indulges her passion for horse riding on the moors while Ralph takes time from his work to join a watercolour painting workshop. Their summer idyll is shattered when it becomes clear that the death of an Olympic Show jumper from what was thought to be a riding accident has more sinister implications.
The Devon police and Europol investigate an International smuggling operation linked to Al Qaeda and grudgingly accept help from Ralph and Katie. A pair of eccentric antiques dealers, a flamboyant restaurant owner, a wealthy retired industrialist and the stressed out local doctor are just some of the many characters that our adventurous pair get to know at the Vicar’s garden party.
Murder at Seething Wells (#5)
Kingston University professor, Ralph Chalmers, aided by the indomitable Katie Eggerton continues his efforts as amateur sleuth in Thurbin’s fifth book in the Ralph Chalmers Mysteries. The doughty Professor finds himself caught between loyalty to his University’s reputation and exposing an unethical research scientist on the staff in another tale of murder and intrigue.
When claims of a breakthrough for a vaccine that tackles the SARS virus attracts attention from international terrorists and a Chinese pharmaceutical corporation, Ralph and Katie become embroiled in the murky dealings that underpin the shadier side of corporate funded scientific research. As the stakes get higher the villains are standing by, ready to grab the money regardless of who gets hurt in the process.
Murder at Downton (#6)
Thurbin does not disappoint in this his sixth book in the Ralph Chalmers Mystery series. Our doughty protagonist and his constant companion, Katie, are on the sleuthing trail again when tragedy befalls a group of American academics who are guests of Kingston University. The action takes the reader from London and the usual tourist attractions to Highclere Castle, the real-life venue for the popular television series Downton Abbey.
Murder on the Rocks (#7)
This is the seventh book in the Ralph Chalmers mystery series. Once more Thurbin provides a gripping mystery that is expertly researched, cleverly crafted and topical. Ralph, aided by Katie and four friends from the University sail Gypsy Lady from Bideford to the ports of Oporto and Lisbon on the Iberian Peninsula, then on to Gibraltar. While enjoying the ambiance of the 1920’s Rock Hotel and exploring the historic military fortress they become entangled in a smuggling ring from Morocco and the European Union process of decommissioning caches of arms held by the Basque Nationalists.
Murder at Canary Wharf (#8)
In his eighth book in the Ralph Chalmers mysteries, Thurbin pits Ralph and the indomitable Katie against ISIS, the Islamic State terrorists who are determined to bring their cause to London. The shadow of the radicalisation of UK students that falls across the Tall Ships Festival at Canary Wharf in London threatens innocent lives unless Ralph can help SO15, the British police special branch, to thwart the terrorists’ efforts. The action takes the reader from London to Falmouth in Cornwall, and to Pripyat in Ukraine, the site of the Chernobyl disaster of 1986. This thrilling episode reaches crisis point in the docklands of St. Petersburg when the Russian militia and the KGB unleash their forces against would be dissidents and it takes all of Ralphs reserves to survive the crossfire. This fast-moving, action packed story has the reader revelling in the tranquillity of the Cornwall countryside one minute and thrilled by a chase across Europe the next. As always, there is a sting in the tail as Ralph wrestles with his conscience and the pragmatism which eventually drives his action. Thurbin turns out another cracking mystery that is topical, thoroughly researched, and impeccably crafted.
Murder on the Cathedral Express (#9)
In Thurbin’s 9th book in the Ralph Chalmers mysteries, Ralph and Katie are drawn into the competitive and lucrative world of modern art in this fast paced story that revolves around a contender for the Turner Prize who has invented a process which animates the paintings of the old Masters. When Ralph and his friends board the Cathedral Express, a classic 1940’s train drawn by a steam locomotive, for a holiday outing to Canterbury, the Christmas spirit loses some of its charm as more murder and mayhem ensue. Ralph must unmask the true criminals in order to prove his innocence in this fast moving story that will excite and challenge the reader as our protagonist confronts the authorities at The University, helps the police find the killer and tackles the master-mind behind the tragedies. Our hero finds himself confronting his own failings while his friends continue to recognize his courage and integrity.
Murder In The Park (#10)
In this, Thurbin's tenth book of the series, Ralph Chalmers joins forces with Colonel Stigart from MI6 to flush out a suspected ‘mole’ in the system. Meanwhile the tranquility of one of the Royal Parks is threatened when a Phd student’s body is found among the bracken. Ralph’s challenge is to discover who wants to use the student’s work to break into secure communication systems, and why. Muslim fundamentalists and City equity traders provide contrasting sources of motivation for murder and corruption in this fast moving tale. Our protagonist, aided by his indomitable partner, Katie, confronts religious fundamentalists, helps the police track down the killers, and unmasks the mastermind behind the tragedy. As always, the reader will find the descriptions of the places that Ralph visits charming, and the twist in the final denouement will both excite and surprise. Readers who enjoy the John Le Carre thrillers will love a romp through Murder in the Park.
The Magna Carta Murders (#12)
In Thurbin’s 12th book in the Ralph Chalmers series, Ralph and Katie find themselves involved in attempting to prevent the theft of one of Britain’s National Treasures. This fast paced, gripping, contemporary story revolves around the 800th year celebrations in England of the signing of the Magna Carta. While helping the police and MI6 unmask the criminals, Ralph unwittingly exposes Katie to danger. Suspicion of complicity in the theft falls on friends from his Cambridge days which creates a moral dilemma for our hero. The action moves between Washington DC, Runnymede on the Thames, Salisbury in Wiltshire, Maidstone in Kent, Brighton in Sussex, and Southwark in London. The reader will be challenged to discover how the thieves plan and execute the heist, and who the mastermind is behind the scenes. Ralph finds himself deep in the action, but at times his objectives are at odds with those of the police and the authorities. The story will both excite and challenge the reader, and as always, Thurbin offers an ending with an unusual twist.
