1. Murder at Barnaby House
A creepy voice on the phone tells Cortney Barnaby that she’s the heir to a multimillion-dollar estate in the town of Bayou George. The voice tells her that she must travel to Bayou George the next day and arrive before her twenty-first birthday to inherit the estate of an aunt she didn’t realize she had.
Cortney, having grown up in an orphanage, can’t believe her luck. She quickly scrapes up enough money for the road trip to Bayou George, which isn’t an easy task since she works as a waitress at a truck stop.
However, even before arriving in town, things turn creepy when she stops to remove a dead, black cat from the middle of the road, only to have it suddenly go from roadkill to alive and well. Thus, does Tom Cat enter her life. Cortney quickly learns that he is proof that cats do have nine lives, when he is recognized in Bayou George as having died the same day as her Aunt Morticia.
Things get even stranger when Cortney meets the freaky man behind the creepy voice. He tells her that her inheritance comes with conditions. Suddenly, her hopes to grab the cash and leave the creepy house fly out the window. And, when he reveals that her aunt was murdered and that the murderer might try to take her life as well, Cortney must decide if the money is worth the risk.
Little does Cortney realize what is in store for her at Barnaby House. The more she learns about the butler and the other residents of Barnaby House, the creepier it gets. She soon learns that she must believe in the impossible, or lose her sanity, as she uncovers the secrets of the mysterious house.
2. Hidden in Plain Sight
The murder investigation of Chief of Police Joe Bob Thornton while walking to the Sweet Shop Diner, lands in Cortney’s lap. The circumstances of the murder point to the use of magic or a magic creature. Thus it is a case for Cortney and not the police who don’t know about the existence of a parallel world of magic in Bayou George. However, Cortney barely has time to spare for an investigation since she is a full time waitress and studies magic at night.
The appearance of a handsome vampire complicates the investigation. Even though Cortney is attracted to the vampire, she must try not to let her attraction to him interfere with her objectiveness as he could be the killer. This proves difficult as she and the vampire interact at the diner. As more suspects pop up, Cortney finds herself challenged as a witch.
And to complicate matters, she promises Chester the ghost that she will find a spell to release him from his self-induced imprisonment in his bedroom. When the spell goes sideways, Barnaby House must deal with the consequences. There is never a dull moment as Tom Cat and Gator try to solve Chief Thornton’s murder.
