1. His Song Silenced - Most people come to Aspen to relax, to ski, and maybe to shop. Lately, a few have come to kill.
Yeah, that’s a big problem, particularly for me. I’m Henrietta Morgan, the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office’s only detective.
Our mobster troubles started when a world-famous rap star, Splendiferous Wang, vanished from a party at a downtown hotel. It turns out, his family runs a thriving smuggling and extortion business out of Hong Kong. The Wang triad is legendary for its viciousness, so it’s certainly possible that Splendiferous was a victim of an Asian gang war.
I’m hoping he might’ve just headed off to some retreat for rich people and forgot to tell anybody. Okay, I’ll admit that’s not likely, but a girl can dream, can’t she?
And if that wasn’t trouble enough, Russian mobsters are sniffing around. They call themselves bratva, and their assassins are former KGB agents. I’m not looking forward to meeting any of the them either.
Then we’ve got Crips in town. A few gangbangers from Denver or LA showed up at the party where Splendiferous was last seen.
Sweet Jesus! How can we stand up against all of these depraved killers? I love my job, but this has to end badly for some of us in local law enforcement. We’re spending more time dodging bullets than we are solving crimes.
Finally, to top it all off, I have an election to win. Before all the mobster craziness started, I filed papers to run for sheriff. There aren’t many places in Colorado where an openly lesbian candidate could win, but Pitkin County might be one of them. Assuming I live long enough.
Wish me luck.

2. Perverted Justice - Millions hate Sherman Blatter, the idiot doctor from Denver who’d killed a semi-tame lion in Africa a few years ago. Blatter’s medical practice imploded after that stunt, and now he lives full-time in Aspen. The poor lion’s head still hangs in Blatter’s fancy downtown condo.
A couple of days ago, he took off with his bow in the hopes of bagging an elk in the high mountains southeast of town. Hasn’t been seen since.
I’m Hank Morgan, a Pitkin County Sheriff’s deputy. My bloodhound and I are part of the search and rescue team looking for the missing proctologist. It’s possible he just got lost, but the sour feeling in my stomach tells me different.
Here’s why—over the last few years, hundreds of people have threated to kill the moron—modern day vigilantes. One of them might’ve followed through. Those self-righteous lunatics seem to sprout up everywhere lately. And once they spill blood, they always crave more.

3. Sacrifice - It’s not every day that I see a bony hand trying to claw itself out the Roaring Fork River. Mind you, the ice along the edge of the water didn’t help, but it is mid-December. Aspen’s crazy season is in full swing, and I have to be ready for anything.
I’m Henrietta Morgan, Pitkin County’s newly elected sheriff. No one in the area is missing, nor has anyone complained about having lost a hand. That means some stranger died among us, probably by act of malice.
We organize a search for the rest of the victim, and our worst fears are confirmed. We find half of the body belonging to a young woman. She was systematically carved up with a meat saw, and the parts were dumped in the river.
My first task is to figure out who she was. That always turns out to be tougher than it should be. How could anyone just disappear when we were all so closely watched? Google and Facebook know every time I walk out of the house or head to the donut shop.
All I can say for sure is that anybody coldblooded enough to slice up a young woman and dump her like yesterday’s garbage is depraved enough to kill again. That includes shooting at the cops on his or her trail. We need to work fast, before more bodies turn up.
