John Rader Thrillers by Ian Quarry (1-5)
Requirements: epub reader, 1.5 MB
Overview: Ian Quarry grew up in the 80s devouring hard-boiled crime thrillers and watching all those movies your mom wouldn't like. At college he was the guy who got excited over out-of-print John D. MacDonald and Mickey Spillane. In his thirties he figured out his writing style and wished he didn't blow his twenties in Loserville. But what're you gonna do? Chances are, as you read this, he's writing his next book.
Genre: Mystery/Thriller

1. John Rader - Who would mess with a man like John Rader?
When tough-as-nails PI John Rader walks away from a car wreck, leaving behind a dead blond, a lot of bullet holes, and most of his memory, he sets out to discover who wanted him dead, and why. In a place like Brink City, and with a man like Rader, that could be a long list. Then he hears the name Max Dressler – an ex-con with his own underworld empire – and his gut tells him it’s right. Removing Dressler alone won’t do it, though – not if Rader wants to walk these streets again. He needs to wipe out his whole damn crew.
But Rader is working at several disadvantages. First, he doesn’t know what they look like, while they know him. And second, all he has are the dollars in his wallet. Dressler has real money, he has powerful friends, and he has muscle. Good thing Rader’s not interested in the odds.
Only the corrupt local police chief, Gertz, takes Rader’s threat seriously from the start. He damn well better.
2. Dead Money - Couple of guys about to underestimate John Rader. Big mistake.
All Rader wanted was some downtime. But when an ex-client, Sam Nixon, calls up asking for help, Rader is already tiring of the easy life. The job is in Las Vegas, and to get it done he’ll have to face small-time drug dealers, big-time mobsters, Polish muscle, and a dancer with a pistol on her nightstand. Business as usual for a man like Rader, then.
But his dealings in the desert town trip a switch back east in crime central USA, Brink City, unleashing a hell that awaits his return. Just when Rader thinks he’s closing the file on the Nixon job, he discovers there’s no such thing as neat and tidy in his line of work.
First there’s the wrath of Police Chief Gertz, whose previous war with Rader didn’t end well for the department. Then there’s the racketeer Jay Rattray, who lost a cousin to Rader, and whose brother now rots in prison. And there’s a third complication: Jill Goldblatt, Rader’s on-off girlfriend, is suddenly in harm’s way.
They misjudged Rader once before – who would be so dumb as to actually do it twice? Not a good idea if you want to stay healthy. Not a good move at all.
3. Feeding the Beast - Good men are hard to find.
When tough-as-nails PI John Rader almost takes a bullet on another dead-end job, he figures his night can’t get any worse. Then he meets Meagen Lopez, whose sister, Linda, is trapped in a world of drug money and dirty cops. Reaching Linda is no routine assignment though—not when her boyfriend, Tom Usher, is the wealthy, older type, used to getting what he wants. But Usher isn’t a typical sugar daddy. He’s the biggest beast in the baddest crime syndicate in town.
For Rader, getting anywhere near Linda risks mob attention, and no amount of money is worth that. It doesn’t help that Rader knows his client, Meagen, is a pawn in an escalating feud between Usher and deadly city rival, Paul Gallo.
Then, just as Rader begins to make the connection to Linda, his client disappears, forcing her sister to choose loyalties before it’s too late for them both.
Two clients, two sisters—twins—who both want the same thing: the other’s safe return.
And John Rader is the only man who can help.
4. American Rules - The rules are very simple. It’s either business, or it’s not.
When tough-as-nails PI John Rader takes the call from Yvonne Thornwood, he’s already into a dead-end case and glad of the change of scenery. But Yvonne isn’t a regular client, and this isn’t a regular job. Left in tatters by a sadistic ex called Skylar Marquis, Yvonne pays Rader for any dirt he can find. Hurt the guy enough to mess with his world? That’s no easy assignment when Skylar is a man who gets to live by his own rules.
First there’s the bubble he inhabits as a millionaire celebrity. Second there’s his security blanket of thugs, always alert to a stranger asking questions. And there’s his mobster associates.
Then Rader learns a gang of heisters are in town to rob Skylar’s casino—that they’re crazy enough to believe they can get away with it. Getting in with amateurs is not good business by anybody’s rules, but it’s all Rader’s got before time runs out to make things right.
Rules, or no rules. It’s all the same thing to John Rader.
5. Scorched Earth - Surviving is only half the battle.
A routine assignment for PI John Rader turns deadly in all the time it takes to fire a gun...
When Rader accompanies his latest client, Joe Markham, to a business meeting with some men from Sage County, Arizona, the last thing he expects is an attack that leaves Markham dead, and his own name at the top of a syndicate hit list. For Rader, getting out alive is only half of it. The rest is finding out why somebody wanted him taking a dirt nap before the day got old.
That somebody is mob boss Lou Scarano. Down in the desert wastes of Sage County, it’s always a bad idea to annoy Scarano. Rader’s client was just another irritation for him—a small-time business guy who wouldn’t do what he was told. Rader, though, is a loose end Scarano can’t afford—better not take the chance.
If Rader decides that getting out of Arizona is the answer to his problems, then he’s wrong. Dead-wrong.
