Requirements: epub/azw3/mobi reader 1.6 mb
Overview: Candy Denman spent most of her life as an NHS nurse but now concentrates on writing full time. She has written extensively for television programmes such as The Bill, Doctors and Heartbeat. Having enjoyed writing both crime and medical stories, she decided to combine the two in her series set in Hastings.
Genre: Mystery/Thriller

2. Body Heat - When police doctor Callie Hughes is called to a crime scene, pronouncing death isn’t difficult. More difficult will be determining the age and sex of the victim. The charred body found inside a burned-out car is so badly damaged, it will be a challenge for forensics to identify.
The question facing the police will be whether this was an unfortunate accident or foul play. From an initial examination of the scene, Dr Hughes has formed her own conclusions. The car was parked in such a way as to make exit difficult, and the position of the body indicated the victim struggled to escape.
As further evidence emerges, the investigating detectives agree with her hunch that it is murder. And when another death occurs in similar circumstances, she becomes convinced they are dealing with a serial killer.
Certain characteristics of the crime bear the hallmarks of a known arsonist. Yet Hughes becomes further embroiled in the case when she is asked to act as a responsible adult for the suspect, a juvenile with a history of mental illness.
But when the heavy-handed tactics of the police begin to grate with her, she decides to do some investigating of her own. Will her curiosity get the better of her and put her at risk from the very person she hopes to protect?
5. Deadly Remedies - A wily doctor goes out on a limb to find a killer
Two elderly people passing is an unremarkable occurrence in the British seaside town of Hastings, and certainly not unusual for police doctor and medical examiner Callie Hughes.
But what bothers her inquisitive nature is that both individuals had recently packed a suitcase. Not the obvious actions of those with one foot in the grave.
Exploring further, Callie’s colleagues find irregularities in the bloods of one of the deceased, but having been cremated, the other individual is beyond reach.
Her concerns dismissed by the obstructive, former romantic interest, DI Steve Miller, who can see no link between the deaths, Callie is side-lined and left to deal with a new trainee at the surgery who is proving hard to handle.
If only Callie would rest her case, peace might return. But she is convinced a killer is out there, and won’t stop nosing until she proves it.
6. Murder Lust - An intrepid medic tracks a killer looking for the ultimate thrill.
Police doctor Callie Hughes is having doubts about her life on the south coast after her boyfriend’s move to Belfast, when a mysterious death draws her once again into a criminal investigation.
A woman is found dead in a holiday let. There are no signs of sexual assault but her bruised neck and protruding tongue suggest foul play. Callie notes a small mark on the woman’s partly exposed breast.
The once supportive DI Steve Miller has a new love interest and without him being on the ball, the case seems to be going nowhere. Well, that’s until another body is found some days later. Going downhill would be more accurate.
Suspicious that someone is targeting visitors to Hastings, the medic decides to carry out her own inquiry with the help of Miller’s increasingly frustrated partner, DS Bob Jeffries.
But without a safety net, and faced with a killer who knows how to cover their tracks, Callie is the only person standing between them and freedom. And that makes her the number one target.
7. Bones of Contention - When human remains are discovered in the garden of a house in the seaside town of Hastings, Dr Callie Hughes can’t resist trying to dig up the truth.
However, her amateur sleuthing is put on the backburner when her car is vandalised. She seems to have a stalker, and they are becoming increasingly intent on terrorising her.
DI Steve Miller suspects it is a released criminal whom Callie helped put behind bars. But even with the detective sleeping outside her home and her friend Kate Ward protecting her, the situation escalates.
Perhaps it is time to up sticks, leave the south coast for good, and head to Belfast where her boyfriend is waiting.
Or perhaps someone with a bone to pick will stop Callie in her tracks.
