1. Interviewing The Dead - Should you be afraid of the dead – or the living?
London, 1892
Over two hundred years ago, in 1665, a mass grave was dug to house the hundreds of corpses who fell victim to the Black Death. When Aldgate Underground station was extended, the workmen discovered the grave and unceremoniously dumped the bones, to make way for the new track.
Now, a renowned spiritualist is claiming the dead are rising to punish Londoners.
Strange encounters start to be reported in London’s East End with some people dying from unexplained causes.
People start to panic, and distressed parishioners consult local preacher, Matthew West, looking for reassurance.
Matthew is at a loss and turns to local doctor, James Carlyle, for answers.
Carlyle and West have very different views on science and religion, but they decide to work together to get the bottom of the mysterious deaths.
Has a curse really been put on London? Have the dead risen from their graves?
Or could a serial killer be loose in the city…?
2. Death Comes But Twice - Who would want to murder a man who is already supposed to be dead?
London, 1893
When doctor James Carlyle is given a dead body to investigate, he makes a shocking discovery.
Innovative fingerprinting techniques reveal the dead man was Artus Skuja. But Skuja was hanged a year ago…
Carlyle discovers that his new friend, local preacher Matthew West was present at the hanging, and seeks out his help in solving the mystery.
And when more deaths occur, it seems a larger plot could be at large.
What really happened to Skuja? Who covered up his death?
And why was he targeted after his escape…?
3. Confronting the Invisible - Is someone stealing children from London’s East End…?
London, 1893
When doctor James Carlyle attends a show at a local circus with his daughter, Adelaide, he is rushed backstage to help with what appears to be a horrific accident.
One of the performers, Robert Manston, has died after falling during an act. But Carlyle soon realises Robert’s palms had been covered with grease.
The man’s performance partner, George Rose, has gone on the run, and Carlyle and Inspect Jennings of Scotland Yard both believe George may have caused the fall on purpose.
Meanwhile, children start to go missing from local preacher Matthew West’s Bible class, and a spate of burglaries are reported in London’s East End.
Matthew and Carlyle decide to help Inspector Jennings solve the mystery. And Adelaide is desperate to help Matthew find the lost children.
Are the crimes connected? Is there a link to the murder at the circus?
4. Death Among the Nightingales - Has the Ripper returned to haunt London…?
London, 1895
Matthew and Adelaide West are now happily married with a one-year-old daughter.
But Adelaide has always sought after a profession outside of the home. And when infamous nurse, Florence Nightingale, offers her a job, she cannot refuse.
A Fenian bomb has blasted through the Officers’ Mess inside the Waterloo Barracks at the Tower of London, and Adelaide and the ‘Nightingale Nurses’ are sent to care for them in the Tower Ward.
But before long, some of the nurses are brutally attacked. And rumours start to spread that Jack the Ripper has returned.
With Adelaide at risk, Matthew and Carlyle begin their own investigations within the Tower walls.
Can they find the killer before more nurses fall victim to his crimes?
Or will there be more deaths among the Nightingales…?
