When a body is found beneath the remains of the mansion, Hazel’s fears for her father’s safety grow.
By contrast, Sean’s suspicions about her father grow.
Sean, Hazel, and her aunts suddenly find themselves literally trapped in a mystery where the only way out is to solve the case.
To make matters worse, Hemlock keeps talking about a monster that he claims is stalking everyone, waiting to strike.
Hazel dismisses his claims as ridiculous scaremongering… until she finds tracks that no human could have left behind.
With ghosts, monsters, and a murderer to contend with, can Hazel and Sean solve the crime?
8. Sage and Secrets - Part-time devil, Jesse Heathen, is back in Wormwood...
...which means trouble isn’t far behind.
After the mysterious disappearance of the town’s previous mayor, an election has finally been called, but one of the candidates is about to lose their head.
All of the signs point to someone trying to clean up Wormwood… by acting as judge, jury, and executioner on anyone they deem to be guilty.
Sean and Hazel must stop the misguided angel of justice before the death toll rises, but with so many secrets being spilled during a particularly vicious mayoral race, finding the big bad wolf in sheep’s clothing in amongst all of the other wolves in sheep’s clothing seems like an impossible task.
At least Hazel can hazard a guess at the prime candidate for the killer’s next victim.
The vigilante wants to get rid of Wormwood’s troublemakers, evil-doers, and rumour-mongers.
Jesse Heathen ticks every single box.
9. Patchouli and Problems - Too much of anything can be bad for you… even luck.
A sinister cursed object, concealed somewhere within the house of DCI Sean Admiral, holds his life in its fickle grasp. One thing remains certain: once cursed, no one has ever escaped their fatal fate - not even the woman who left the malevolent property to Sean. When the echoes of her murder were still lingering, Sean accepted the house, hoping that the killer who eluded his capture would one day return to the scene of the crime.
The shop across the street from the Salem Apothecary has found new tenants. A peculiar community with plans to open a no-coffee-cafe, and an irksome tendency to turn every conversation into an attempt to recruit the unlucky listener to their cause, has arrived in Wormwood. However, their incessant preaching of peace and love soon proves to be a smokescreen for the dark secrets each and every one of them is hiding... and it’s not long before one of those secrets turns seriously sour.
Faced with a double mystery, Hazel despairs as she frantically tries to find something that could save Sean's life, while he persistently places duty above all else, even his own impending doom. But, when ominous revelations start to surface in the shop across the street, and the mystery turns to murder, she’s afraid it's only a matter of time before Sean's luck runs out.

The gods are descending upon Wormwood for their annual Spirit and Supreme Convention and Jesse is convinced that his days are numbered. After Hazel and Sean are persuaded to investigate his murder before it’s even happened, they grudgingly attend the convention and are unsurprised to discover that almost everyone there has a bone to pick with their devilish friend.
But when the murder finally happens… it’s not Jesse who’s met with a sticky end.
With the clock ticking down to Halloween and the convention’s culmination, Sean and Hazel must unravel the cryptic threads that have tied the deities together for centuries and find the motive behind the body in the baking van, the identity of the person they saw fleeing in the darkness, and the mysterious symbol left at the scene of the crime.
To make matters more complicated, Hemlock has applied for a job with a cutthroat interview process. Hazel’s support for his ambition ends when she discovers the life-or-death stakes and tries to get Hemlock off the hook. But witches and familiars are bound together, and it’s not long before she finds out that Hemlock has put more than just his own life on the line in his pursuit of power…
