Inspector Harry Charlton series (# 2, 4) by Clifford Witting
Requirements: ePUB Reader, 1.81 MB
Overview: Clifford Witting (1907-68) was a prolific English detective novelist, and occasionally screenwriter. He was educated at Eltham College London and served in the Royal Artillery and the Ordinance Corps during WW2. He married Ellen Marjorie Steward in 1934 and worked as a clerk in Lloyds bank from 1924 to 1942. Witting created his own imaginary town of Lulverton, and surrounding county of Downshire, used as a setting of his tales. This is perhaps near the real life county of Kent, in Southeast England. His series characters were Sergeant (later Inspector) Peter Bradfield and Inspector Harry Charlton.
Genre: Fiction > Mystery/Thriller

2. Midsummer Murder: Witting's second Inspector Charlton mystery, first published in 1937, is set in Paulsfield (clearly a fictional Petersfield in Hampshire). It is a market day and there is much noise and bustle. A bull decides it is time to liberate itself and goes on the rampage. As this is happening, a cleaner working on the statue in the middle of the square is shot dead, straight through the head. Inspector Charlton has very few leads on this case. There is no obvious motive for the cleaner's death, and when two further murders are committed within the same day, both taking place in the market square, the mystery has obviously deepened exponentially.

4. Catt out of the Bag: How, where and why did a man disappear from a group of carol singers on that cold December night in Paulsfield? It hardly seemed likely that he had absconded with the collecting box. But the more that Inspector Charlton found out about the missing person, the less certain he became that he would find him alive …
Catt Out of the Bag appeared first in 1939, one of sixteen novels that the author wrote between 1937 and 1964. Catt has a delightful traditional Christmas setting, is full of humour and will be a must for all fans of classic detective fiction.
