Overview: I grew up on Long Island, in a pleasant, suburban town about 30 miles from New York City. I loved to read from a very early age and graduated from Columbia in 1974 with a degree in English. Not encouraged by the job prospects for English majors at the time, I went on to medical school at Northwestern, where in addition to my medical degree, I acquired a life-long love of deep dish pizza. I did a residency in Anesthesiology at Columbia Presbyterian and spent most of my career at Stony Brook, where I ultimately attained the academic rank of Professor and Vice-Chairman for Administration, Department of Anesthesiology.

For Kurtz and his wife, Lenore, things have finally returned to normal. It’s been over a year since serial killer Seamus Sullivan terrorized West Virginia and Kurtz is back home in New York, teaching residents and medical students, taking care of patients and enjoying his life. He has a growing practice, a new baby and a big, new house in the Bronx.
But fate has a way of interfering and Richard Kurtz has a knack for stumbling into trouble.
No one expected Marty Blanton, a well-known Broadway composer and Kurtz’ recent patient, to wind up with a bullet through his head.
Was it suicide or was it murder? Lew Barent thinks it was murder, and Kurtz cannot resist trying to untangle a mystery that involves organized crime, sex-trafficking and entrenched corruption in the NYPD.
8. Bait and Switch - Surgeon Richard Kurtz has recently accepted the position of Chief of the Division of General Surgery at Easton Medical Center, and is not surprised to find himself dealing with a new set of problems. Still, he had been expecting those problems to be professional, not personal, and so he is taken aback when Joanna Levinson, the wife of Peter Levinson, a surgeon, asks Kurtz to speak with her husband.
Peter Levinson is disturbed. He’s not sleeping at night. He’s going out at all hours. He’s visibly distressed.
Levinson, it turns out, has reasons to be distressed. An old friend, lawyer Richie Capaldi, has suffered a traumatic brain injury. Two other old friends have vanished…and then Peter Levinson is given an ultimatum by mobster Leo Berlusconi to pay back money that Berlusconi claims Levinson owes him.
Lew Barent and Harry Moran are investigating the assault on Richie Capaldi and Kurtz has information that might help them solve the case.
