1. Shadow of a Broken Man: Meet Dr. Robert Frederickson, or "Mongo" to his friends. He's a former circus tumbler, black belt in karate, doctor of Criminology, and professor at a New York City university. And he's quite an unusual fellow as well, not only because he's a private investigator but also because he's a dwarf... When Mongo is asked to investigate a new building that has been hailed as a triumph of design, it seems like a relatively simple matter. The only strange thing is that the building's design matches the style of a famous architect who died years before. When Mongo begins to explore the possibility that the architect may not have died at all, his case becomes more complex. CIA agents, British spies, United Nations delegates and Russian torturers all begin to converge on Mongo, some willing to do anything to learn what he knows, others willing to kill Mongo to protect their secrets.Shadow of a Broken Man is the first in a series of Mongo adventures. Filled with intrigue and fantastic twists and turns, it's a delightful introduction to a terrific series. Mongo is a appealing character who's every bit as fascinating as the cases he investigates. Fans of the Espionage thrillers and hard-boiled detectives will find much to enjoy in this suspenseful outing.

3. An Affair of Sorcerers: Three apparently separate investigations involving the New York City occult underground of covens, warlocks, tarot readers, faith healers, and palm readers dovetail into a single, explosive climax.

4. The Beasts of Valhalla: The novel that radically altered the nature of the Mongo series, this book blends a classic detective style with elements of science fiction and fantasy. Chesboro takes readers on a wild roller-coaster ride, using the structure and elements of Wagner's Ring Cycle and Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings."

5. Two Songs This Archangel Sings: Mongo and his brother Garth are changed forever, as is their view of the world, because they possess a secret that must never be told. Here the epic adventure continues as the brothers become fugitives and outcasts struggling to solve the puzzle of an extremely dangerous Vietnam veteran with information that could topple the government.

6. The Cold Smell of Sacred Stone: Garth's poisoning by a mysterious substance, combined with his experiences related in "The Beasts of Valhalla," changes his personality, causing him to become estranged from Mongo and his family--and resulting in tens of thousands of people coming to believe that he is the promised messiah.

7. Second Horseman Out of Eden: Christmas time usually finds Mongo in a jolly mood; he and his brother Garth customarily celebrate the season by granting the wishes of needy children. But there is no joy in this year's task - the Frederickson brothers must race the clock to bestow the gift of freedom on a little girl lost in a sinister 'secret place.'
The only clues are traces of exotic soil found in the creases of a letter to Santa and a cryptic reference that suggests the child's tormentor might be a man known all too well to the detectives - a renegade televangelist who is also a deadly white-power zealot.
A desperate search leads the brothers from the New York Botanical Gardens to the opulent Manhattan suite of one of the world's richest and most powerful men - and into an eerie, futuristic world-within-a-world. Here Mongo must face his ultimate challenge - to defeat the murderous giant who has dogged his every footstep... while seeking to avert a global holocaust that may be just a heartbeat away.

8. The Language of Cannibals: While investigating the death of a friend in a small village in the Hudson River Valley, Mongo must unexpectedly duel with an old enemy as well as a right-wing conspiracy.

9. In the House of Secret Enemies: Fans of Chesbro's novels ( Shadow of a Broken Man ) will relish these 10 stories, including the 1971 debut, in "The Drop," of Roberto "Mongo" Frederickson, Ph.D. (criminology), private eye, ex-circus star and dwarf. All but one of the stories are from the hero-narrator's 1970s period of straightforward action/mystery although some (e.g., "Rage," "Book of Shadows") presage Chesbro's later preoccupation with drugs and the occult. Chesbro's early penchant for dwarf-bashing gives way to increasing angst over Big Topics ("belief systems"), peaking in the pretension of "Candala," the story Chesbro says unashamedly he's "most proud of." Mystery stories first appeared in the Mike Shane and Alfred Hitchcock mystery magazines; the introduction, "The Birth of a Series Character" originally appeared in the Writer.

10. The Fear in Yesterday's Rings: Mongo is forced to confront the ghosts of his past. In an attempt to regain control of a traveling circus for his former boss, Mongo becomes embroiled in the hunt for something deadly that many people believe is a werewolf loose on the Great Plains in the heartland of America.

11. Dark Chant in a Crimson Key: Mongo becomes entangled in an international hunt for "the world's most dangerous terrorist," whom Mongo comes to discover may not be at all what he appears to be.

12. An Incident at Bloodtide: Mongo and brother Garth return from an evening sail on the Hudson River to find an unwelcome guest in Garth's home - Sacra Silver, self-styled ceremonial magician and old boyfriend of Garth's wife, folksinger Mary Tree. Now that Mary's burgeoning musical career has returned her name to the record charts, Silver has decided to "retake his woman." Garth, not one to suffer fools gladly, throws Silver out the window. To Mary's distress - she knows from experience that bad things happen to people who defy the lanky sorcerer. Mongo can see that Silver's black magic act is a phony, but Mary is convinced - and terrified. When hideous practical jokes and ugly pranks begin to disrupt their lives, Mongo and Garth realize that the mystical Silver is making nasty things happen right here on the material plane. And then Garth's old friend Tom Blaine, the local riverkeeper and environmental cop, is found dead in the Hudson - horribly hacked by the massive propellers of an oil tanker. During Mongo's investigation of the death, he learns that Blaine had found that the vessels of a major shipping company have been dumping residual oil into the Hudson, then filling their empty tanks with fresh water, to be sold to Middle Eastern governments for private profit. What's the connection between a loopy warlock and a corporate raid on public waters? Mongo learns the truth in a thrilling solo midnight raid on an oil tanker hell-bent for the Atlantic Ocean.

13. Bleeding in the Eye of a Brainstorm: Chesbro's roller coaster ride mixes Stephen King and Raymond Chandler and introduces Mongo, a great new character in mystery fiction.

14. Dream of a Falling Eagle: Part sci-fi thriller and part fantasy, this roller-coaster of a story introduces Mongo, one of the greatest new characters of recent mystery fiction.
