A Modern Treasury of Great Detective & Murder Mysteries (1994) by Ed Gorman (ed. Sun77)
Requirements: ePUB reader, 0.8Mb
Overview:Some people will always insist, first, that the good old days were better, and, second, that there is nothing new under the sun. If you claim that the last twenty-five years have brought an unprecedented renaissance to the field of crime and mystery fiction, that the real Golden Age is right now, they will haul out some heavy ammunition to challenge you. And as long as consideration is confined to individual titles and authors, the advocate of the past will be able to make a case.
There is probably no single book so original in its theme, approach, or subject matter that an enthusiast with a pack-rat memory can’t reach back to the twenties or thirties or forties to cite something roughly comparable. And if someone asks you, where is there a writer today who is the equal of Hammett or Chandler or Sayers or Christie or Queen or Carr or Stout or Tey or Allingham or Armstrong or any of the other crime/mystery/suspense icons, you might have to grudgingly admit that in their particular specialties, those great individuals will never be equalled. But as soon as you start comparing the whole field of the last couple of decades with that of any other period of time, the amazing breadth and depth of the present-day output is overwhelming.
