But Brill Winger has run out of luck.
He reports in after a job and is shot. He barely escapes, but he’s wounded, hurt and wondering who is trying to kill him.
Chased across the country by the man who knows him best may be the end of him. He knows his moves, his haunts and his back up plans.
Even hiding with revolutionary grad students may not be enough to keep him safe.
There’s just one chance to survive, one chance to live and he doesn’t know if he can make it. Not without help.

Now he’s hiding out in the underbelly of Los Angeles picking up work wherever he can.
He can use the skills they taught him, but he can’t leave a signature, can’t leave a trace.
Until one job is impossible.
She’s too young to kill, too innocent and he’s got a question. Why her? Why her child?
And what if he decided to protect them instead?

He saved the girl and set her up so she would be safe. But mercenaries and bounty hunters found him.
The only way he can stay one step ahead of getting caught is to go to ground off the grid. He trades cash for a van and drives into the wilderness searching for some place off the map where he can escape and hide.
The US is dotted with them. Small park trailheads that hold pathways into the wilderness. A lot of people camp there to get away from it all. But when Brill stumbles across a tight knit community with a fresh murder his first night in the lot, all eyes are on him as the killer.
If he runs, they'll think he's guilty and the suspicious deputy could accidentally alert the men hunting for him.
Or he could help find the killer and stay off the radar if the killer doesn't find him first.
