1. The Cuckoo
A quaint village in Surrey is the last place you would expect to discover a young woman brutally murdered, especially in the first few weeks of the Second World War. As the daughter of the local MP, this isn’t just any murder case either. Which is how it ends up on Rufus Stone’s desk at Scotland Yard. Detective Inspector Rufus Stone is tired. He’s sick and tired of having his requests to enlist in the army turned down by his boss. The last thing he needs is to be sent on the trail of a murderer in a sleepy backwater. Especially as this is the very place he fought so hard to escape six years ago. But as Stone starts to delve deeply into the secrets of the village and its inhabitants, he finds himself dealing with a serial killer, and his own involvement in the case suddenly takes a more personal turn.
2. The Blackbird
Having relocated from Scotland Yard to the village of East Molesey in Surrey, Detective Inspector Rufus Stone is looking forward to a quieter life, away from the Metropolis, as well as the chance to spend more time with Amelie, the young woman who has captured his heart. However, he’s barely had time to unpack and settle in before one of his new colleagues is murdered. Sensing a link to the crimes that brought him back to East Molesey in the first place, Stone faces a difficult investigation of a village already traumatised by violent death and, as the case progresses, it becomes clear that the killer’s need for revenge has not yet been sated, and that Stone himself may be in mortal danger.
3. The Magpie
As the end of 1939 rapidly approaches, Detective Inspector Rufus Stone returns to work in the aftermath of his recent injuries and immediately faces two difficult challenges - solve a spate of burglaries and find a suitable engagement ring, and ten minutes of peace and quiet, to propose to his beloved Amelie, the woman who has stolen his heart. However, all thoughts of personal happiness are forced to be put aside when a four year old girl goes missing. Leaving her family in turmoil, little Amy Sanderson has just wandered off from the local park in Long Ditton, vanishing without a trace. Or has she? With more to the case than originally meets the eye, Stone can only solve the mystery if he can get the family to tell the truth – to each other, as well as him…
4. The Nightingale
Returning from his honeymoon at the beginning of 1940, Detective Inspector Rufus Stone is looking forward to settling down to married life with his new bride. The very last thing he needs is to walk straight back into a murder investigation… But when the body of a young woman is found in the churchyard of a nearby village, he finds himself in the midst of a particularly harrowing case, shrouded in mystery and secrets. Doing his best to juggle his personal and professional lives, Stone quickly establishes the identity of the killer – at least in his own mind – leaving him with just one problem… A complete absence of any evidence. Are Stone’s suspicions correct though, and more importantly, will he be able to prove them, before the guilty party escapes?
