“Dope” is the story of an organisation which distributed smuggled cocaine and other drugs to the drug slaves of Britain. In the career of the fascinating Rita Dresden may be traced the influence of cocaine, and at a Duke street opium party we may become spectators, with the smokers, of the singular visions induced by Chandhu. The murder of Sir Lucien Pyne in the rooms of Kazmah, the dream reader, and the disappearance of the beautiful Rita, open a narrative of mystery which the most experienced investigator might well fail to unravel. But, pitted against the Dope group—-at whose head are Kazmah, Sin Sin Wa (the insidious Chinaman), and his Cuban wife, Lola—the reader will find “Red Kerry,” the most truculent detective in fiction, and the elusive “man from Whitehall.”
“Dope” is based on the story of Billie Carleton, a young English actress whose scandalous lifestyle ended with her death from a drug overdose in 1918.

Sax Rohmer, in this novel of Chinatown, has placed together as thrilling a series of episodes as ever left the pen of this versatile and vivid raconteur. It concerns the Lotus of the Tong, the emblem of highest power, which is in possession of Burma Chang, who lives in a house of mystery in Limehouse. On the way to London from the Docks, Bernard Hope, alone in a railway carriage, is astounded by a fascinating, slant-eyed woman entering the compartment. She enjoins secrecy, and cajoles his railway ticket from him in order to pass the barrier at the terminus. On arrival at Fenchurch-street Hope is arrested for the murder of Burma Chang by “The Sighing Death.” Suzee Che Loo, a fascinating Chinese lady, however, knows about the affair, and detectives, aided by a King's Counsel, on behalf of Hope are kept busy unravelling the tangle. The Lotus is snatched from the dead body of Burma Chang under the nose of a detective and eventually finds its way into the possession of Hope. An eager interest is inspired throughout the quest by side issues, which shuttle the principals between Limehouse and Mayfair and Bernard Hope's cottage. Only in the closing pages is the astonishing machinery of the puzzle disclosed, and another fine story is rounded off in true Sax Rohmer manner.
