Overview: Master of suspense and bone-chilling terror, Robert W. Walker, BS and MS in English Education, Northwestern University, has penned 44 novels and has taught language and writing for over 25 years. Showing no signs of slowing down, he is currently juggling not one but three new series ideas, and has completed a film script and a TV treatment. Having grown up in Chicago and having been born in the shadow of the Shiloh battlefield, near Corinth, Mississippi, Walker has two writing traditions to uphold--the Windy City one and the Southern one--all of which makes him uniquely suited to write City for Ransom and its sequels, Shadows in White City and City of the Absent. His Dead On will be published in July 2009. Walker is currently working on a new romantic-suspense-historical-mainstream novel, titled Children of Salem. In 2003 and 2004 Walker saw an unprecedented seven novels released on the "unsuspecting public," as he puts it. Final Edge, Grave Instinct, and Absolute Instinct were published in 2004. City of the Absent debuted in 2008 from Avon. Walker lives in Charleston, West Virginia.
Genre: Mystery

1. Killer Instinct (1992): Dr. Jessica Coran, a brilliant and determined FBI medical examiner, was an expert student of the criminal mind who thought she could face anything. That was before Wisconsin. Before she saw one of his victims... The FBI had a special code name for his unusual method of torture: Tort 9, the draining of the victim's blood. The newspapers called him the Vampire-Killer. But his own twisted love letters were signed 'Teach'...and were addressed to the one woman he wanted most of all: His hunter, his prey, Dr. Jessica Coran.
2. Fatal Instinct (1993): From the author of Killer Instinct--a terrifying novel of psychological suspense. Jessica Coran's capture of a brutal Wisconsin serial killer receives a lot of media exposure . . . and brings her requests for help from across the country. Her newest case takes her to New York City, where she hunts for a modern-day Jack the Ripper.
3. Primal Instinct (1994): Jessica Coran's Hawaiian vacation is cut short when she is ordered to assist in the urgent investigation of a local serial killer called the Cane Cutter. Jessica is no rookie when it comes to dealing with serial killers, but this time she must infiltrate the seedy underworld of Hawaii--where she'll need more than her FBI badge to survive.
4. Darkest Instinct (1996): A new cat-and-mouse crime thriller featuring FBI medical examiner Jessica Coran who travels to Florida to track down a murderous misogynist.
5. Pure Instinct (1995): A new horror is stalking New Orleans. He is the "Queen of Hearts" killer, removing the hearts of his young male victims. He is savage. He is unstoppable. And the New Orleans Police commissioner has requested - by name- the aid of Dr. Jessica Coran.
But another horror is stalking Jessica. The man known as "The Vampire Killer" has escaped from prison, leaving a trail of blood-drained bodies in his wake. No one knows where he is- but they do know that he's coming for Jessica, the woman that put him behind bars.
Now Jessica faces double jeopardy. And not even a new - and unlikely - partner from the FBI's experimental "psychic" program can protect her from two killers...
6. Extreme Instinct (1998): Jessica Coran faces a murderer paving a path of terror from Arizona to Montana. He ties his victims down, drowns their sins in gasoline, and cleanses them with flame. He is on a Satanic mission--and only by stepping into the fire can Jessica stop him.
7. Blind Instinct (2000): FBI Medical Examiner Dr. Jessica Coran is enlisted by London's elite New Scotland Yard to head up an investigation into a series of brutal crucifixion murders and must draw on all her expertise in tracking serial killers to capture a clever psychopathic murderer.
8. Bitter Instinct (2001): FBI Medical Examiner Dr. Jessica Coran is investigating a series of bizarre murders attributed to the Poet. His calling card is human skin engraved with toxic ink and verse. For Jessica, the most baffling aspect of the crimes is that no victim shows signs of resistance, or even fear. Only she has the insight to read between the Poet's lines-and to stop him before his final stroke of insane genius.
9. Unnatural Instinct (2002): "For years, FBI medical examiner Dr. Jessica Coran's greatest adversary has been Judge Maureen DeCampe, whose brand of revolving-door justice has made enemies and headlines. Now she's Coran's first priority. The controversial magistrate has hit the front page once again - but this time as a victim." "Abducted from the caverns of the courthouse garage, DeCampe has vanished off the face of the earth. There's been no demand for ransom. No ultimatum from the kidnapper. No clues, and so far, no suspects. And each dead end is feeding Jessica Coran's worst fears. If it's not money the abductor wants, then it's revenge. And if it's revenge, then the nightmare is just beginning for DeCampe - and for anyone who dares to look for her." Now, miles from civilization, in a deceptively peaceful stretch of the Iowa heartland, a stranger lies in judgment - and in wait. One woman has already been brought before him - condemned in his own private court of law. Soon, another woman will follow, lured into the dark hollows of his secluded little farmhouse where justice is served in the most unimaginable and unnatural of ways.
10. Grave Instinct (2003): The first killing is a morbid hint. The second confirms the fact: A serial killer is on the loose - with a method unlike any that Dr. Jessica Coran has ever come across. As she briefs fellow FBI agents on the killings, her mind can barely wrap itself around the case. Someone is drugging young women, cutting into their scalps with medical precision - and making off with their brains. What he is doing with them continues to baffle even the top FBI experts...
Until Jessica discovers the killer's mysterious calling card: a sign carved into the back of each victim's skull. Then, an anonymous phone tip implicates Daryl Thomas Cahil, a madman whose cannabilistic escapades included digging up the recently buried bodies of young girls to devour the part of the brain in which he thought their soul resided. Conveniently, he's just been released from a penitentiary for the criminally insane, where he'd undergone an unusual form of "rehabilitation."
Though most of the evidence points to Cahil, Jessica has her doubts. But even she can't anticipate the twist her investigation is about to take - one that gives millions of people a front row seat for the next victim's death.
11. Absolute Instinct (2004): Even an experienced forensic pathologist like Jessica Coran is shocked when she learns that a woman has been killed-and her spine has been removed from her body.
Complicating the case is the fact that one man has already been convicted for a similar crime, years earlier. Is there a copycat killer loose? Or does this mean that the man on death row is innocent? Jessica Coran is his only chance for freedom and the only person who can catch the killer...
Watch your back, Jessica.
