Following yet another murder, Juliette is drawn into the mystery when it's noted that she was the last person to see the deceased alive and an item belonging to that person is found in her bedchamber!
Juliette has no choice but to clear her name. Among the suspects on her list include the attractive housekeeper, a prim governess who quotes the Bible whilst correcting everyone's behavior, a pair of handsome young gentlemen twins, a visiting cousin who has no proof that she truly is a cousin and two meddlesome children who chase kittens.
When Juliette receives an ominous threat on her life, she knows time is running out. Can she expose the killer, or will she find her neck in a noose as payment for both the theft and murders at Medley Park?

When Miss Abbott is invited to spend a fortnight at Martindale Manor as companion to a young blind girl whose father suddenly passed away, Miss Abbott believes she's been offered the perfect respite from murder and mayhem in the tiny hamlet of Martindale in England's North Country. Told that the girl's brother and heir, Sir James Martindale, is even now on his way home, Juliette and her trusted maid Tilda set out in high spirits for their four-day journey north. However, upon arriving in Cumbria, Juliette is shocked to learn that the murders have already begun! Miss Martindale's father did not simply pass away; the man was viciously murdered! What's worse, Juliette soon begins to suspect that the late Sir Robert's killer, the man who arrived at Martindale Manor proclaiming to be the long lost heir has already taken up residence amongst them!

When Miss Abbott is assigned to select art works for the private gallery of Lady Marley of Marley Chase and her husband, who is staging a prestigious Derby there, Juliette and her maid Tilda confidently set out for the large country manor home. However, once there, troubling events ensue. A maid is found floating face-down in the stream, and within the house, a thief is preying on Lady Marley's aristocratic house guests! One after another of them finds herself the victim of the brazen jewel thief!
Juliette has her suspicions as to the thief's identity, but is possessed of no proof. When one of the lady guests is found tragically murdered, Juliette manages to catch a glimpse of the killer as he flees from the scene, but because Miss Abbott found the dead woman, who was also robbed of her jewels, the finger of guilt soon points at Juliette! Fortunately, her handsome gentleman friend Mr. Sheridan is amongst the Marley Chase house guests. Having been dispatched by the Home Office to protect the life of a prominent statesman from a ruthless assassin, Mr. Sheridan and Miss Abbott once again team up to solve both crimes, that of murder and theft. However, when the assassin steps up his game and kidnaps both Miss Abbott and the ambassador, Mr. Sheridan has only moments to act before his lovely lady friend's life is taken and he loses her forever."
