As President of the Parke Croquet Club, Hettie Parke is used to dealing with people problems, but despite her best efforts not everyone is open to reasonable discussion. When the last person she butts heads with is found dead on her croquet court someone seems to think their disagreement was enough to drive her to murder. Why else would they have set her up as the prime suspect?
Between fearing arrest, pressure from her mother to protect the Parke name, and her brother’s penchant for broadcasting her indiscretions, Hettie feels she has more than enough problems. But then the detective investigating the murder turns out to be none other than the handsome Grayson Fox whom Hettie had known quite well in a former time. Perhaps that will be to her benefit. Or perhaps not.
Hettie finally realises she must do some investigating herself to clear her name. Sister-in-law Gwen offers to help, but when daughter Violet brings home a black cat called Ceefer things turn decidedly odd.
2. Betwixt and Bewitched - It was an accident…everyone said so…so what - or from whom - is Aunt Alice hiding…
When Uncle Roscoe meets with a fatal accident at home, Aunt Alice deals with it stoically - at first. So when she starts acting strangely and won’t allow anyone in her house her family are understandably concerned. Has she had a breakdown? Is it time for her to go into the Sunny Vale nursing home? Or does she have a guilty conscience?
Drastic measures are called for but Aunt Alice’s explanation, when it comes, is difficult to accept. Haunted by her husband’s ghost? These things don’t happen in Hettie’s world. This isn’t something she can solve with a lesson plan or a firm whack from her croquet mallet. And it certainly isn’t a police matter if Aunt Alice ends up under suspicion.
But Hettie’s not the only one out of sorts. What is Ceefer upset about? He’s not sulking, surely? But apparently even a cat with a larger than normal ego has his weak spot. Will he get over himself in time to help Hettie rid Aunt Alice of a haunting husband and save her from the nursing home? Or worse?
3. Death by Candlelight - Murder, fraud and secrets. A cat-astrophic combination.
Hettie Parke is pleased and relieved when her mother’s charity auction at the Sunny Vale Community Centre gets off to a great start. But then a body turns up, and tragic as that is Hettie is just relieved that the death has nothing to do with her or her family. Or at least it hadn’t, until the dead man becomes linked to rumours that her grandfather’s legacy was acquired by fraud.
Hettie isn’t about to let go of her dream to expand her croquet club and while the police are only interested in apprehending the killer her investigation delves greater depths.
With the killer hustling to cover their tracks can Ceefer help Hettie reveal their identity before they kill again? Or is the Parke legacy about to go up in smoke?
