Coldlake Creek’s residents are having a blast at the tiny town’s annual Independence Day celebration, but by dawn’s early light, Elsie’s neighbor Marcia Ludlow is missing! The only pieces of evidence left behind are her purse and a mysterious set of tire tracks in the grass.
At Chief Campbell’s request, Elsie steps in to help with the investigation to find Marcia, but the stakes are raised when a man’s body is found in the back parking lot of Elsie’s bookshop. And Elsie knows time could be running out for Marcia when the body is identified as Dario Cipriani, a dangerous drug lord who is number two on the FBI’s most-wanted list! Stranger still, tacked to Cipriani’s shirt is a letter warning: You have 36 hours.
Marcia’s disappearance is almost certainly related to the dead drug lord on Elsie’s back porch, but how? And what will happen if they don’t find Marcia in 36 hours?
With appearances by her trusted sidekick, Ollie, her feisty Persian cat, Ella, and Governor Jack Ellis, who always manages to show up just in time to annoy her, Elsie and her gang race against the clock to find Marcia and bring her back home safely to Coldlake Creek.

Homicide at the Harvest Festival - During Coldlake Creek’s annual Harvest Festival, several of the small town’s residents are nearly killed when a carnival ride goes rogue, spinning out of control. With no carnival worker at the helm of the ride, quick thinking by Sheriff Bennie Campbell saves everyone on the ride when he pulls the emergency stop handle bringing the ride to a slow but ultimately safe stop.
Questioning why the carnival worker had abandoned his post, Bennie and Elsie find an answer quickly: they find the carnival worker dead behind the Fresh Cut Fries stand.
And the mystery doesn’t stop there. An ominous trail of blood leads away from the body and into the nearby corn maze, where a second body is found!
Who killed the carnival worker, leading to the near-death of many beloved Coldlake Creek residents, and who killed the second victim, a woman nobody in Coldlake Creek or the carnival company can identify?
Two bodies, no suspects, and a carnival crew that will be leaving town in less than 48 hours unless evidence can be found to keep them around.
With a return by Detective Mickey Cross and Elsie’s spunky Persian cat, Ella, this will be the most challenging mystery to solve, to date, for small-town amateur sleuth Elsie and her crew, Ollie and Governor Jack Ellis.
