Who am I kidding?
Everything bad that happens in Misery, Indiana has Aunt Rosie’s name written all over it.
That should make problems easy to solve, right?
Not so much.
Aunt Rosie is dead-ish.
A mishap with a spell she was told never to try made her and about a dozen other relatives disappear into the unknown space between the living and the dead.
To make matters worse, no one can know and I’m the only person who can see or hear them.
When the town’s claim to fame–an artifact worth more than 20 million dollars–goes missing, the crime has all the hallmarks of something my Aunt Rosie would do. Why?
Because she’s done it before.
Friends, foes, and former neighbors want to speak to her about it. I can only buy time for so long.
If I don’t find a way to reverse the ancient spell and bring her and my other aunts and uncles back to the land of the living, I’ll have a lot of explaining to do about where she is and why she won’t answer questions. Or worse, they’ll think I’m in on the theft and will make me pay for the crime neither of us committed.
I don’t want to go to prison and Aunt Rosie couldn’t have stolen the artifact–this time.
Can we find the brazen thief before people get wind of Aunt Rosie’s current circumstances and learn the truth about my family?
2. Uncle Mikey Lies - I’m Caryse and I’m way out of my element. For starters, I didn’t inherit my great uncle’s baking skills, so what am I doing in his kitchen? Second, no one in the family has seen or heard from him in five days because the spell reversal didn’t go as well as Aunt Rosie and I had hoped. Third, a trio of big, burly men with thick eyebrows and even thicker accents want the money he owes them. Yesterday!
Something tells me these men aren’t big on story-time. I could tell them the truth, but they’d never believe me. I could run and hide, but they’d find me.
Instead, I beg for an extension and promise to have their money for them on Friday. Today is Tuesday. That gives me three days to locate my uncle, make him tell me what this is all about, and come up with the money he owes this trio before someone gets hurt, and by someone, I mean me.
Can I shore up my lackluster magical abilities to solve this dilemma?
3. Aunt Augie Runs - Auntie Augie is my favorite aunt. I followed her everywhere when I was little because she was so much fun. I followed her as I got older because her brand of fun almost always led to trouble. Where one went, the other followed… until Aunt Rosie made the whole family disappear. That left me alone and defenseless in a town full of people who have been mad at the Reyes family at least once or twice over the years.
Right now, Auntie Augie is the target. Addison “Addie” Powell, President of the Misery Ladies’ Guild, has always had it out for her. Their rivalry began when they were in grade school. Auntie Augie moved away after high school and returned twenty years later, only to discover Addie still didn’t like her. It didn’t matter, though. Auntie Augie never really cared what others thought of her… until Addie told the women of the Misery Ladies’ Guild that Auntie Augie stole the money they were saving for a group cruise adventure.
Now, Auntie Augie is missing—kind of, sort of. She’s yet another victim of Aunt Rosie’s spell debacle. I made Aunt Rosie reappear, but neither of us know how or if we’ll ever be able to bring Auntie Augie back to defend herself, so we’ll have to step in and prove she did nothing wrong.
Can we do it before the rumor mill gets out of control and ruins Auntie Augie’s reputation?
