4. A Long Day's Journey Into Death - A regular day at the Serious Crime Unit quickly spirals out of control, when DI Buchan and his team are asked to investigate the case of a missing film director.
The story of Claire Avercamp has been in the news, but her life has been a tale of a wasted career, failed relationships, drugs, alcohol and bad decisions. She’s been missing for over a week, presumed drunk, comatose or dead, but she’s burned so many bridges, no one seems particularly concerned.
However, Avercamp's father is an old friend of the chief inspector, and brings new information. His daughter had been working on a film about the theft of antique manuscripts. Despite all the evidence to the contrary, he thinks her disappearance is not an act of self-sabotage.
At first reluctant to get involved, Buchan quickly realises this is a high stakes game, and there are more players than anyone realised. Money is at play, lives are on the line, and deadly intrigue lurks around every twist and turn of a day that will stretch deep into the darkness of night…
