Requirements: .ePUB, .MOBI/.AZW reader, 2.91 MB
Overview: Adrian worked as a photographer, a journalist and a charity fundraiser, all giving him the opportunity to see first-hand the life that others lead, as well as regular press passes to Brands Hatch. Now, a full time writer, living in Kent with his wife, he writes both thriller mysteries and humorous detective books, which some say will make a great case study for a psychologist’s convention. His biggest challenge now, is no longer finding the time to write, it is to protect his biscuit tin from sneaky swoops carried out by his grandsons.

The Reluctant Detective (Martin Hayden Mysteries #1):

Martin never planned to do any actual detecting. He just wanted a quiet life. Something his mother was not going to allow. There again he never for one moment imagined he would have to look into the death of a 90-year-old lady who was gambling away her family fortune. The Hayden Detective Agency has no need of clients. The very existence of the Agency allows Martin Hayden to claim his large monthly allowance from the family fortune - without lifting a finger. Martin’s biggest problem is his interfering mother, who understands her idle son too well. She takes steps to find him not just clients but also a personal assistant to keep an eye on him. Under pressure from the women in his life, Martin agrees to take on his first client. How hard can it be to follow a 90-year-old woman who spends her time losing money at roulette tables? As it turns out harder than Martin ever thought possible, especially with the old lady dying in strange circumstances. Soon the Reluctant Detective is grappling with shady estate agents, an intellectual artist, missing charity money and an irritating Indian waiter. Luckily for Martin there is help in the form of Colin, a transvestite who, apart from having very good fashion sense, is an expert at breaking into houses.

The Reluctant Detective Goes South (Martin Hayden Mysteries #2):

Just because Martin runs a detective agency, it does not mean he has any intention of investigating anything, except the lunchtime menu at his favourite Michelin-starred restaurant. However, for the benefit of his mother he must occasionally appear to be working. Consequently, he agrees to help an old school friend who has found himself on the wrong side of the law and is now serving his community service in a charity centre in south London. Not that Martin ever wanted to visit such a place, but old dormitory chums help each other. Things become complicated for Martin when his eager assistant Susan sees a pile of parking tickets strewn across his desk. She believes his number plate has been cloned and decides they should investigate and find the culprit. Martin is not so sure that another investigation is such a good idea. After all, he has enough money to support his privileged lifestyle and pay the fines without question. Never one to be discouraged, Susan follows the leads, which take them to a run-down south London council estate, where Martin is introduced to a side of the capital he never imagined existed. Before long, Martin is reluctantly mixing with drug dealers, sex chat-line operators, loan sharks, ageing criminals plus an unbearable little girl, all of whom he considers to be UPS (unpleasant people sorts). Yet nothing will stop Susan getting at the truth, not even a male, good-looking Italian who collects saucy postcards and charms her with chilled Italian white wine.

The Reluctant Detective Under Pressure (Martin Hayden Mysteries #3):

It all began when Martin agreed to do a simple favour to help Ernie's brother. Things started to go wrong when it transpired Ernie's brother was allegedly a part-time industrial spy who was preparing for an alien invasion. Martin thought it all unbelievable and totally ridiculous, while Susan had the simpler mindset of: ‘don't knock it, until you try it’.
Pressure mounted on Martin when Colin, who is always happy to help with any investigation, found himself arrested for obtaining confidential information from the National Police Computer.
There was no let-up for Martin who then needed to take responsibility for the family's financial affairs after his mother was taken ill.
To relieve some of the pressure, Martin sat down with a glass of red wine and reluctantly wrote a to-do list, something he never dreamed he would ever need. This list included: locating Ernie's brother, tracking down an industrial spy, saving Colin from a prison sentence and finding a replacement family accountant. Oh, not forgetting helping Susan to save the earth from invading aliens.

The Reluctant Detective Goes North (Martin Hayden Mysteries #4):

The plan was for a pleasant weekend away. Martin attending the wedding of a friend. A few drinks, stimulating conversation, good food, plus two nights in a four-star country hotel. The slight problem was Martin needed to take a female guest. Susan seemed the obvious candidate, why not?
To be fair it wasn’t her fault, she told Martin, it was the lost dog, which she made it her mission to reunite with its owner. The trouble was in doing so they discovered a burnt-out house; the conflagration allegedly having been started by a church. Martin, who never had much interest in matters spiritual, intended to continue with his relaxing weekend. That changed when Susan decided there had been a blatant injustice that needed to be rectified.
As for the friend’s wedding that Martin hoped would be some sort of refuge from Susan’s crusade, it was nothing of the sort. An unexpected hotel guest only added to Martin’s woes.
