Overview: Len Deighton was born in London in 1929. He worked as a railway clerk before doing his National Service as a photographer attached to the Special Investigation Branch. After his discharge in 1949, he went to art school- first to the St Martin's School of Art, and then to the Royal College of Art on a Scholarship. It was a while working as a waiter in the evenings that he developed an interest in cookery - a subject he was later to make his own in an animated strip for the Observer and in two cookery books. He worked for a while as an illustrator in New York and as art director of an advertising agency in London.
Deciding it was time to settle down, Deighton moved to the Dordogne where he started work on his first book, The Ipcress File. Published in 1962, the book was an immediate and spectacular success.

Samson 02 - Game, Set and Match 02 - Mexico Set: The second novel in the trilogy. Bernard is sent to Mexico in order to "enrol" the East German Erich Stinnes.
Samson 03 - Game, Set and Match 03 - London Match: The conclusion to the trilogy. Bernard has got Erich Stinnes back from Mexico - now he has to get him to talk.
Samson 04 - Hook, Line and Sinker 01 - Spy Hook: This novel is the sequel to "Game, Set & Match" and set three years later. Bernard Samson is still investigating the defection of his wife Fiona to the East, despite all the warnings he has received, both friendly and otherwise.
Samson 05 - Hook, Line and Sinker 02 - Spy Line: This spy-thriller by the author of "Game, Set and Match" features Bernard Sampson again, and is set in Berlin in the winter of 1987. The book is the second in a sequence of three.
Samson 06 - Hook, Line and Sinker 03 - Spy Sinker: The third novel in Deighton's "Hook, Line and Sinker" trilogy. Spanning a ten year period (1977-87), Deighton solves the mystery of Fiona's defection - was she a Soviet spy or wasn't she? He also retells some of the events from the "Game, Set and Match" trilogy from Fiona's point of view.
Samson 07 - Faith, Hope and Charity 01 - Faith: First in a trilogy of novels featuring put-upon hero Bernard Samson. In this post-Cold War thriller, Deighton gives his, and Samson's, account of how the Wall fell and the West won. It has plot and counter-plot, descriptions and sly wit, and it is about international and inter-personal politics.
Samson 08 - Faith, Hope and Charity 02 - Hope: Bernard Samson needs to stay out of trouble, to get to know his wife Fiona again, to put his relationship with his lover, Gloria behind him and to to re-establish contact with his children. But the arrival of a wounded man in the middle of the night indicates that trouble won't be easy to avoid.
Samson 09 - Faith, Hope and Charity 03 - Charity: This is the concluding volume of the author's "Faith", "Hope" and "Charity" trilogy. It depicts an intriguing world of covert operations and office politics set in and around pre-unified Berlin.
