Overview: A hilariously poignant look at one girl's attempt to bridge the great divide between grand ambitions and absurd reality, the story is told from the point of view of Karma, a fourteen-year-old girl with Hollywood aspirations, growing up in 1979 in a backwater Florida town populated entirely by retired circus freaks. Her best friend is the former professional Fat Lady who runs the town bookmobile, her grandfather is a Little Person undergoing an extensive makeover in an attempt to become the local news anchorman, and her mother is a Disneyphile who travels with the carnival dressed as an ever-revolving series of generic costumed characters - mostly recently appearing in Biloxi in blue faux fur as "Goof-Goof the Dancing Dog." Barry Manilow, B-movie moguls, and "The Power of Positive Thinking" figure prominently in Karma's quest to achieve what no other freak has: The Big Time.
