Annie Was Warned (2003) - Annie was warned not to go to the creepy Montgomery mansion . . . and maybe she wouldn't have if her best friend hadn't dared her. But Annie isn't afraid of anything. Not bats, not spiders, and certainly not some haunted house. Or is she?
Good Night, Monkey Boy (2001) - Who's that eating a banana? Swinging from the shower curtain? Making faces in the mirror? Why, it looks like a monkey!
But not to Mommy. Mommy knows it's her own monkey boy, and even monkey boys need their sleep. But first, they need to clean up their room and take a bath. Then she'll read a story. "Good night, Monkey Boy . . . and no more bananas!"
Ollie The Purple Elephant (2011) - Ollie is a purple elephant who is lost and has no place to call home. Until Shelby and Peter find him in the park - and invite him to live with them. Soon Ollie is a regular part of the family. He doesn't have a room to call his own, but he doesn't mind. He is happy. He loves hopscotch and kickball - but most of all he loves the dance parties the McLaughlins have after dinner.
But Mr. Puddlebottom, the downstairs neighbor, most certainly does not love Ollie. And neither does the McLaughlins' cat, Ginger. Ollie has taken her spot on the couch at night. When the conspirators hatch a plan to get rid of Ollie, the purple elephant walks right into their trap - and onto a circus cart. Will he ever be reunited with his family?
Peanut Butter and Jellyfish (2014) - Peanut Butter and Jellyfish are the best of friends and swim up, down, around, and through their ocean home. Crabby is their neighbor. He is not their best friend. But when Crabby gets in trouble, will Peanut Butter and Jellyfish come to the rescue? You bet they will!
Hey Kiddo! - In kindergarten, Jarrett Krosoczka's teacher asks him to draw his family, with a mommy and a daddy. But Jarrett's family is much more complicated than that. His mom is an addict, in and out of rehab, and in and out of Jarrett's life. His father is a mystery -- Jarrett doesn't know where to find him, or even what his name is. Jarrett lives with his grandparents -- two very loud, very loving, very opinionated people who had thought they were through with raising children until Jarrett came along.
Jarrett goes through his childhood trying to make his non-normal life as normal as possible, finding a way to express himself through drawing even as so little is being said to him about what's going on. Only as a teenager can Jarrett begin to piece together the truth of his family, reckoning with his mother and tracking down his father.
Hey, Kiddo is a profoundly important memoir about growing up in a family grappling with addiction, and finding the art that helps you survive.
