Not Quite a Mermaid series by Linda Chapman (Books 2-10)

Overview: I grew up by the sea and I’ve always loved it. The house where I was living had a back garden that ended in a cliff which led down to the beach. I used to stand at the edge and look out at the sea and imagine the merpeople living out there.
I wanted to be one of them so much and so I wrote about Electra who is! But she is ‘not quite’ a mermaid. She was born a human but was found by the merpeople when she was just a baby, she was in a small boat after a massive storm. They gave her sea-powder to help her breathe underwater and she was adopted by a young adult mermaid called Maris. She doesn’t have a tail and that is not the only thing that makes Electra different fro the other mermaids, she is far more adventurous and always getting into trouble with her best friend, Splash, a dolphin. Together they face giant squid, sharks and shipwrecks. Electra and Splash are two of my favourite characters so I hope you like them too! ~ Linda Chapman

2. Mermaid Island - Elecktra is a human mermaid a mermaid with legs instead of a tail. Abandoned as a tiny baby, she was found by the merpeople of Mermaid Island. They decided to adopt her and gave her sea-powder so that she could live and breathe underwater. Now aged nine, Elecktra is always getting into trouble, usually because of her desire to have adventures. Whereas most of the merpeople are content to stay within the safety of the coral reef that encircles Mermaid Island, Elecktra longs for excitement. She is often leads the other merchildren astray but then saves the day through her resourcefulness and courage.
3. Mermaid Friends - Electra and her school friends are off on an overnight trip to Craggy island. When they arrive, Electra sees some of the older mermaids looking at her and giggling and she is upset to discover they're laughing at the fact that she has legs instead of a tail! The girls are even meaner later on when they tell Electra and her friends that the island caves, they plan to have a midnight feast in, are haunted. The next day the older mermaids swim off to the rocks where a special moss grows that will make their hair shine. But later on, Electra sees that the girls have got stranded on the rocks and their tails are burning in the sun! Even though their teacher told them not to approach the rocks, Electra decides to go and help the girls as she is the only one who can because of her legs! The older girls are so grateful that they show Electra and her friends an underwater grotto, lit up by mermaid fire with tiny pink jellyfish and seahorses where they all have the best midnight feast ever!
4. Mermaid Party - Electra, the nine-year old mermaid with legs instead of a tail is back and in search of even more adventure!
It's New Year on Mermaid Island. Every year a young Queen of the New Year is chosen and Electra is desperate for it to be her! So she might get chosen, Electra and her dolphin friend, Splash, decide to swim over to the grotto to help the grown-ups decorate it for the New Party. But Electra and Splash get carried away and make a BIG mess in the grotto. Sent away to behave, the two of them discover tunnels at the back of the grotto which lead to the deep sea. All the tunnels are safely blocked up except one. Electra and Splash try and tell the adults but they are too busy fixing the mess to listen! So when a group of sharks swim down the tunnel and threaten to eat everybody it's up to Electra and Splash (and a giant ink squirting squid) to save the day!
5. Mermaid Treasure - When Electra hears of hidden treasure in the caves near Mermaid Island she is very excited.
She and her mer-friends decide to form a treasure hunters club but their first hunt is abandoned when everyone gets stung by purple jellyfish! On the way home Electra finds a tiny rare dwarf seahorse surrounded by the same jellyfish. She swims in and saves him before he gratefully swims off to his secret seahorse lair. No one wants to explore very far after being stung and Electra gets very frustrated - in fact she and Sasha have a big fight about it. Sasha is so upset that she swims off - in the wrong direction! Electra swims after her but before they realise it they're both lost. Luckily the tiny seahorse appears again to lead them back to safety and on the way he leads them to a secret cave with a very special surprise!
6. Mermaid Wish - Electra really wants to go and explore the shipwreck near Mermaid Island. She thinks she might find objects that would help her discover things about the human world she came from. Maris, her adopted mermaid Mum, won't let her go as it's too dangerous, but Electra won't let that stop her.
7. Mermaid Surprise - Electra is so excited about Gran's birthday party. She knows the perfect present to get her - a baby sea mouse. But a scary snake has been spotted in the caves where the baby sea mice live. Only a super brave mermaid would swim out there now.
8. Mermaid Promise - Electra has had a great idea. It's been a year since her best dolphin friend, Splash, came to live on Mermaid Island - so she's going to throw him a party! But when Splash meets some other wild dolphins, Electra is scared that he will want to swim away with them for ever.
How can Electra make Splash stay?
9. Mermaid Rescue - Electra is very excited. Two of her mermaid friends have asked her if she would like to go camping with them on Craggy Island. What an adventure! But the adventure comes to an abrupt end when Electra's mum tells her that she is too young and won't let her go. How will Electra have any fun now?
10. Mermaid Tricks - Electra is having a brilliant time playing scary tricks on all her mermaid friends, and when Sparkle, the baby seahorse, joins in they have even more fun. But not everyone finds Electra's tricks very funny and when she tries to warn her friends about something truly dangerous, no one will listen to her.
